A sweet victory

A magnificent performance by our boys today, made all the sweeter by the attitude of a small minority of opposition fans.

Everybody played well, and it is hard to single anyone out for special praise.

We absorbed pressure for the first 20 minutes, but always looked dangerous going forward. Our first goal followed a superb pass by Hockton to Yiga, who controlled it well to beat the keeper.

Wealdstone started looking scared then, but it was probably honours even until just before half time when Brayley won a free kick just outside the area, which was curled past the wall into the top corner by Hockton. You won’t see a better one all season.

After half time the home side pushed forwards, missed a couple of open goals and hit the woodwork twice. However they committed themselves too much, and Hockton got his second after good breakaway work by Brayley.

Brayley controlled the ball well to take the last goal. You would have said the scoreline at that time slightly flattered us, but it was a stroll in the park afterwards and we could have knocked in a few more. Only Beckford and Cooper of their players seemed to show any interest at the end.

Behcet 7. Good handling, weak kicking. Subbed just after the break by…

Mitten 8. Excellent control of the box, superb kicking. One slight fumble (recovered).

Standen (RWB) 8. Always in action and did well on the opposite side to his usual position. Got kicked and booked for a bad foul. Apparently the ref didn’t see the retaliation.

Deen 9. Played a blinder I thought. Always in the right position, dealt well with every threat, and helped out in attack when the opportunity occurred. Limped off; hope it was nothing too bad.

Trott 8. Very commanding. Excellent defensive headers.

Donovan 8. No nonsense defending. Beckford (being scouted by premier clubs) hardly ever got past him.

Allman 8. Another fine match at LWB, with one or two off-target chances at the other end.

Keister 8. Good midfield distribution and defending. Not everything came off, but a couple of through balls were real beauties.

Hilaire 7. Hard work and started to look good coming forward when the space started opening up. Subbed soon afterwards though.

Brayley 9. Not too many trademark dribbles today, partly due to the very knobbly pitch. Still class though with some superb layoffs and positional play. Will get back to defend too. Tired at the end but had done a lot of running.

Hockton 9. Will probably get MOM and I wouldn’t argue. The pass for the Yiga’s goal was a gem, the freekick goal was as good as it gets, and his second would have been goal of the match on another day.

We also saw Damoah, who looked competent in defensive midfield, and Zippy (that’s got to be his nickname, hasn’t it?) who looked good going forwards.

Good noise from a fairly small band of Gate faithful. Is it my imagination or does that drum get bigger every week?

The majority of Stones fans are no doubt good people, including the old boy who was given an award by former Wealdstone favourite Chris Kinnear.

How embarrassed they must be by the foul-mouthed morons who seemed to be on a mission to disgrace their club.

In particular I refer to the bald-headed short-*rse with the wrap-around shades, who spent most of the afternoon hollering abuse at Margate’s players and supporters, the match officials, and sometimes even his own players.

I am sure he can’t read, so anyone reading this who knows who I mean, please pass on the following message:

Thanks mate, because your vile gob made our well-deserved victory all the sweeter.

Thanks for the report Chris. Really seems like everything is starting to come together now. Good to hear that Charlie is back playing again, not that Darren hasn't been superb cover.

Have to agree , as I mentioned in other thread they were very hostile towards our players, but how sweet it was to beat them. We even had a bit of gamesmanship, taking things slowly, and how it riled them. Chris stated a small band of gate supporters but I think they were a bit more spread out as I counted 50 and there were a few in the stand so at least 60 but probably 70. I believe the coach was full and we went by tube. Am I right in saying that this is our first Double of the season?

By the way nice to meet you today Alex T

Behcet injured when the ball flew across the face of the goal early in the second half. A forward landed on top of him. It didn't look too bad, and probably he could have carried on if we hadn't had Charlie on the bench.

Ditto I think Hasim came off as a precaution.

Behcet was subbed through injury, Joseba, after a scramble in the goalmouth. I think it was knee, but whatever it was, he was limping badly. Although match rusty, Charlie did very well when he came on as sub, and you could see him growing in stature and confidence through playing again, which was good to see.

Hope neither player is seriously injured, although its good to see that we seem to be able to cover injuries now without having to sign new players. Good to see John Keister playing well again, hasn't had the best of seasons in my opinion, also good to see Hiliare and Yiga working well going forward.
