Enfield Town 4 Arlesey Town 1

lovely stuff

I believe most people would have been disappointed at half time with a 1-0 scoreline after having played with a very stiff breeze. However, the team did grind out a rather flattering 4 - 1 in the end.

Good to see David Wilkinson from Hampshire and Alison North this afternoon. They both had their pictures taken with Jim as part of the sponsor a seat campaign.

A recent letter from David, who left home at 9.30am this morning to get to the ground by 2.00pm, says 'I shall really feel proud and very honoured to come up to my favourite football club, who are doing so very well in the Southern League Division One, East. I would like to wish everyone connected to ETFC a very happy and successful new year in 2006.

Now there's a supporter.

Well it was a competitive match with a score line that may have flattered a bit.

Boniek Forbes opened the game early on with a shot just wide. Arlesey Town set out their stall with a tight offside trap which Bryan and co seemed to get caught in with a bit too much regularity in the early stages. Bryan Hammatt found himself in a one on one with the keeper Bussey for a defender to clear the ball before it reached the line. Steve Velandia shot wide. Mark Cousins punched the ball clear in the early stages. Arlesey shot wide. Rudi Hall set piece cross found Adam Gant in on goal but again the ball was cleared off the line. Bryan Hammatt just missed volleying a corner into the net. A free Kick sailed just over the bar. At the other end Arlesey were queuing up and falling over themselves to get a shot in and when it came it ricochets off the inside of the bar and was scurried away by a defender. At the other end Bussey was at his best to fingertip the ball over the bar for a goal kick. Not the best ref! A Corner was tipped over again by Bussey. Boniek filling with confidence tried a scissor kick which went way wide. Eventually in the 37th minute Bussey is beaten in a one on one with Forbes. A Matty Negus cross was punched away by Bussey just preventing Kieron Woodward heading a goal. End of first half was OK but it was certainly an interesting tussle.

Second half Town were caught napping and Mark Cousins saved well. Steve Velandia was brought down on the edge of the box. On the 49th minute Rudi Hall stepped up and scored with ease. 2 – 0. Bussey needs some practice at organising his defenders better. At the other end Arlesey again fired a shot which bounced off the underside of the bar and out again for a defender to clear. Arlesey threw everything except the kitchen sink forward with shot after shot being saved by Cousin or a defender. At the other end a Bryan Hammatt one on one was saved. Matty Negus skied one from the edge of the box. Kevin Stevens headed to keeper before going down with cramp. Kevin Stevens off and Steve Baldwin on. On 78 minutes Bryan Hammatt going route one in a one on one with Nick Bussey is adjudged to have brought him down and the referee points to the spot. Nick Bussey gets a straight red, much to the dismay of the town fans who for once thought the Arlesey keeper was unfortunate. A reserve Keeper came on and Rudi dispatched the ball 3 – 0. A member of the bench team from Arlesey was so incensed that he was also sent off too. Bryan Hammatt and Boniek Forbes off and Johnny Morgan and Dean Nyman on. At the other end in the 85th minute Michael J Fox finally beat Cousins. 3 – 1. Al James Hannigan shot wide. Rudi Hall ended in a tussle that saw both players booked.

Finally in the 90th minute Johnny Morgan scored in the bottom right corner. 4 – 1

The cold wind was difficult and the sun low in the sky the elements certainly played their part today.

Brush invests in youth duo

Teenagers Kevin Stephens and Boniek Forbes have been given their first professional contracts at Leyton Orient.

O's boss Paul Brush handed 18-year-old defender Stephens a year's deal and Forbes, 19, has been given a contract until December.

Brush, who has started an end-of-season clear-out at Brisbane Road, says it is important for the club to nurture their home-grown talent.

"We feel that they have a lot of potential and both have a lot of pace which is a key asset," Brush told the club's official website.

"Boniek is a left-winger which is something we don't have at the moment.

Three more exit O's

"Kevin is powerful and determined, and he's played both centre-back and full-back.

"Both he and Boniek deserve their chance to impress."

The pair have been an integral part of the reserves side but have had only limited first-team action.

But Brush insisted that the club are determined to bring them on when their next Division Three campaign gets under way.

"They have been told they will not be in the background next season, they are going to play a full and important part in our squad."

Non-league Dail notes

"Born in Guinea Bissau, Forbes moved to Hackney from Portugal and was named by his father after the Polish soccer legend Zbigniew Boniek.

He was spotted by a Leyton Orient scout playing for a Stratford-based junior side named Junior Hammers and impressed in a friendly against an O's side and was invited to train with the club.

He signed a contract for Orient in July 2000, having impressed in both junior and reserve games, including scoring five goals for an O's under-17 side against Southend United in December 2000. He turned professional in April 2002.

He was a member of the under-19 squad that retained the Riviera International Cup, held in Exeter during August 2002, and netted three goals in the tournament, including one goal in the final, a 4-3 victory over FC Victoria from Paraguay.

In November 2002, Forbes scored a goal, described by Orient’s youth team manager Ian Culverhouse as one of the best goals he had ever seen in his long career.

“Boniek ran fully 70 yards and beat seven of their players, it was a wonder goal," said Culverhouse at the time.

He was released by the O’s after appearing around thirteen times for the first-team, mainly from the bench, and signed for Redbridge in March 2004. "
