Chelmsford City v Slough Town: MATCH THREAD

OK, I can partially understand the bottle lids, but it would take a bloody good throw to hit someone with any power with the running track in between! Seemed to be a complete lack of bins around the ground as well?

Nice to know that they were so concerned about getting bottle lids that someone was able to get in with scissors, because they are obviously less dangerous than a bottle with a lid!

On Friday I wasn't sure if I'd be able to make it to Chelmsford yesterday - boy, am I glad I was! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wall.gif" alt="" />

Don't know where to begin with that performance - it was Folkestone all over again. God only knows what's happened to the team's mindset over the last week after 8 unbeaten games. Rebels without a clue (and no shots on goal). The absence of Clark Masters was clearly very important. Felt sorry for Parkin, clearly very low on confidence and match-practice with no reserve games recently. Doesn't excuse the rest of the team for not trying to adapt to the conditions though. I really didn't think Chelmsford played well at all or looked a good team, but that isn't surprising given that they have something like 10 squad players out injured. It's just that Slough were so abysmal that they coasted to victory.

Have to admit to being surprised by the hoardes of stewards present too, searching bags etc. Whether it's largely for show, I don't know - one of them told me I had to remove a bottle lid, but then told me it would be ok as long as I hid it... maybe their presence will die down in due course as crowds fall back to a 'normal' level.

The rest of the setup is as good as can be expected given that it's an athletics ground first and foremost. Well done to them for finding a home. However it's not great generally for watching football, and you have to imagine that it's a temporary solution if they want to start climbing the leagues, as I don't think you can go above Conference South level with a running track if I remember correctly.

understand about bottle lids and agree100% it is ott what happen was some bottles were thrown from the kids who where sat in the stand i belive in one of the first games back so hence why they ask to remoe the lids i think this should be done for the kids but would like to think oldeer fans know how to behave about bringing food in to the bar some of your fans turn up with chips brought from outside the ground we sell food in the bar so i would think it would be officious why you cant eat food brought outside in the bar if they where brought in the ground then dont know why you coudnt eat them in the bar

I think all of us at Chelmsford appreciate that a running track around a football pitch is not ideal but for us the choice was that or oblivion. I feel that the problem of the distance between the fans and the play is mitigated by the elevation in the main stand and by the unique "roll-on/roll-off" terracing behind the goal. Together, the stand and the movable terracing take care of about 2,000 of the 3,000 capacity.

I appreciate that some of you Slough fans would rather continue to travel to Windsor for your home games than move into a Slough Athletics Stadium (if one exists) but the Council have been very generous to us. As well as giving us an interest free loan of £200k, they have spent over £1m on the stand and £160k on the pitch. We've also been fortunate in receiving a £150k grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund.

Certainly, the 1,006 crowd yesterday on a bitterly cold day between two teams with little more to play for this season in terms of relegation or making the play-offs was indication of the underlying support for the move. Had the game been played at New Lodge I guess the attendance would have been circa 300 and we would have derived no income from bar or food sales.

Well get stewards when they ask to search peoples bags to say there was an air pistol incident and sorry for the hassle etc.
But why couldn't i take chips into the clubhouse?

Brighton; it's asking a lot of the stewards to tell every single person the story. And isn't it standard that restaurants have a sign up stating "patrons are not allowed to bring their own food" or something.

Sorry, but it's not too much for stewards to be polite and just say 'sorry, we've had a bit of trouble'and the food was brought from your ground and i tried to eat it in your bar.

I know council's can be sticklers for rules, i hope they chill out, you sort out your troublemakers, and you don't have to have so many stewards.

I like non league cos of the friendly attitude and i think its something your club need to work on at the moment. Fair play for getting back to Chelmsford, personally i think you easily have the potential to be a Conference South side with the crowds you are getting.

But being friendly and making the place welcoming won't cost a penny.

I think you're being unreasonable, and a mite over-precious, in suggesting that the stewards should say "sorry, we've had a bit of trouble" 1,006 times.... but that's just a matter of opinion....We've had to quadruple the number of stewards and we haven't been able to do this from within the fanbase so we've had to go out and hire some professionals (I believe we obtained some from Ipswich Town.) I guess some of the prefessional stewards may be a little less "chummy" than the unpaid volunteer stewards recruited from the fanbase which we're all used to seeing at Ryman games generally.

I hadn't realised you bought the chips in the ground. In that case, I guess there must be a rule that food consumed in the clubhouse has to have been ordered in the clubhouse where it will be served on a plate with condiments and where the prices are higher. (I know that M & S don't allow you to buy sandwiches from the food counter and then consume them in their cafe upstairs.) I guess the club feel that there is danger, in a crowed bar on matchdays, of ketchup, etc., being dropped on carpets and soft furnishings and, indeed, on other patrons in the squeeze that we always get on matchdays with 4 - 500 in the bar. I believe that on matchdays you can't actually order food in the bar as all the catering resources of the club are concentrated on the "outside" trade and on the corporate tables upstairs.

What we're "working on" at the moment is establishing a community club and satisfying the council.

We have probably averaged around 2,000 spectators for the 7 games we've played at MP since the turn of the year. Such lage turnouts do create a need to adopt a different approach to these matters than was the case when we were at New Lodge with gates averaging 400. We've been in the ground less than two months and to some extent we've been "making it up as we've been going along." But we'll get there.

"So an incident in a previous match involved an air pistol. So that means that chips can't go into the club house."

Why are you making this association? The two matters are unrelated.

"And scissors are allowed through the gates while bottle tops are not."

Scissors aren't "allowed in." They just GOT in because searches will never be 100% effective. It's like saying that someone smuggled a car bomb through Dover so therefore the Customs think it's ok for car bombs to be brought into the country....

"I can understand certain procedures but I have to say it was all a bit ott!!!"

Whether a thing is "OTT" or not is a matter of opinion. I don't mind the prospect of being searched or carrying an identity card. You may see both of these as invasions of your freedom. As I say, we're learning and we've been back in Chelmsford less than two months.....and our FD probably banked more money yesterday than from 5 or 6 "home" games at Mew Lodge and we're all looking forward to 2006/07 when this income will be reflected in the playing budget.
