Cambridge City fans fight on.....

This is a press release issued by the Supporters action Group prior to an open meeting last night [Thursday]:

"CAMBRIDGE City Action Group believe the fight is not yet over to save the club's Nationwide South status.

City director Jez George confirmed this week that the club would not be able to play Nationwide football next season following the sale of their ground.

But the action group have organised an open meeting at Milton Road tonight (7.30pm), where fans are expected to vote to form a supporters' trust aimed at taking over the running of the club.

Action group spokesman Rab Crangle urged all City fans to attend and added. "Things are very fluid in football and there are twists and turns along the way. What often seems to be the final decision can turn out not to be and when you are seemingly dead and buried, something can turn up at the last minute.

"What I think we should be aiming to do with the formation of a supporters' trust is to take over the club. Now that may come sooner or later, or not at all, but it is certainly the objective. In the short term, we want to work with the club and come up with some sort of solution to the problems.

"We have to be optimistic. We think avenues can be explored and time has not run out on us yet." Crangle also rejected the assertion made by George in last night's News that fans had given the club a mandate to resume talks with Cambridge United over a link-up between the two clubs.

"That's utter nonsense," said Crangle. "There is a very clear mandate from the fans not to pursue the deal with United and that was made very clear at the recent fans' forum."

Despite that forum and an open board meeting at the club last Friday, to which fans representatives were invited, Crangle still believes supporters are in the dark regarding the club's future.

He added: "The things that have come out are the clear intention not to play Nationwide South football next season, although we feel that alternatives have not beenseriously considered. “There is also no clarity on what would happen to money remaining from the sale of the ground. We are told it will be ring-fenced, but it is not clear what that means. I pressed for answers at the board meeting but did not get any.” Tonight’s meeting will also be addressed by a representative of Supporters Direct, the Government-backed body which helps set up supporters’ trusts and Dave Matthews-Jones, chairman of Cambridge United’s supporters’ trust, CFU."

I don't know any real detail but I fear that they are wasting their time persuing a dream of Conference South football next season. To me, they might do better to follow Enfield Town and AFC Hornchurch, form a new club and enter the pyramid at the tier below Ryman 1. The Ridgeons League or whatever it is up there.

Very sad. Good luck to them from me.
