Personally I'd rename G&N to Ebbsfleet F.C. for the start of next season (registering the name with the FA ASAP). This will hopefully put to an end any hopes the Gills Chairman has of moving into the area and obtaining any grants available for a New Stadium.

I ought to add this was said somewhat "tongue-in-cheek" just in case some of the hardcore start chasing me round the terraces come Saturday!!!

Too late the contract has already been placed. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/spank.gif" alt="" />

How about

The Ann Summers Eleven, which could expand to almost any size I mean number you like.

I'm not liking the thoughts that spring to mind of the lads trotting out to play wearing Ann Summers kit, especially on a freezing cold Tuesday evening....those crotchless shorts aren't going to be the warmest.

But surely this could happen anyway without a name change?

There are people suggesting that changing the club's name would put an end to Scally's chances of moving Gillingham to the area and so on, but in reality it's just a name. Personally, if I were a businessman and had researched our club properly, I don't think I'd be any more or less likely to provide financial backing to a club named Ebbsfleet FC than one named Gravesend and Northfleet FC.

Having read WVN's missive with some trepidation, as one generally has to, then followed up with the Distorter report, coupled with what BK has told them, it does make some sense to move with the times, but only when the timing is right.

I for one am a little sceptical whether a name change in the immediate future would benefit the club, but if the club is to attempt to progress into the football league in 5 - 10 years, some visionary thinking will be required by the board; and a name change could provide the impetus required, when coupled with a new stadium to move the club in the right direction.

Personally I would feel against the name change as it woudn't feel as local anymore. But hey, it's not gonna stop me supporting my club. We're still going to call ourselves the fleet aren't we?

If it brings money and revenue to the club then yea I'll support the move but the club must realise - money can't buy you everything AND it doesn't grow on trees!

Isn't it typical that the article concentrates on the possibility of a name change and everyone latches onto that when I should have thought that the important parts of the article where:

'They have also tabled a business plan to increase profits and put the club in a position to make a challenge and transition to the Football League.'

and

'The club is in talks with financial institutions in London to help raise long-term funding and they are confident a major development partner will be unveiled soon.

By strengthening their capital base they hope to achieve promotion, development of their newly acquired leisure facility and the building of a new stadium.'

If it's going to be Ebbsfleet we wouldn't want it to just be Ebbsfleet FC A. Because we wouldn't want to be confused with the local league team and B. Because we wouldn't want to be EFC just like the Toffeemen of Goodison Park.

No, something far more bold and imaginative would catch the marketeers(my day job) attention = how about Ebbsfleet Pirates to reflect our riverside connection and keep Hooky happy, or the Ebbsfleet Express to exploit the link with the station. Just think of the groovy new replica kits and the merchandising opportunities!!!

On the other hand we could call ourselves something to reflect the change in the area i.e. Gravesham(the borough incorporating both Gravesend & Northfleet) and Ebbsfleet(home of the tributary running behind the ground and the name of the station......ladies and gentlemen....I give you Gravesham & Ebbsfleet FC!

On the other hand leave it as it is........happy 60th bithday GNFC.

I play for and am involved with Ebbsfleet FC in the north kent sunday league - we have lost confidence recently and some crucial players but have potential in youth to climb through the sunday league. Im not sure we'd fancy changing our name either!!!! Of course if the club were to contact us that would be a different story!!?? hehe

I have no problem with the possible idea of a name change, as previously stated the Ebbsfleet river flows (albeit now encased) right past the ground, I grew up living nearby and spent many hours playing in or near what we considered a stream, i always felt that enclosing the stream like they did was a big reason why we had waterlogging problems with the pitch many years ago.

But the real crux of the story really has to be the possibility of new funding for the club and proof, if it was needed, that we really could be on the verge of something really exciting in the future.

I just want to wish the board every success in their quest to put the Fleet on the map, and i'm only sorry that I can't be there as much as I would like to support the club as I used to.

I have no problem with a name change , and quite like the Ebbsfleet connection.

In view of one of the oldest local football clubs folding this year and with it an end to over 100 years of history, can I suggest the clubs rebrands itself as Swanscombe United and keeps the name going.

Just a thought

Up the Swanscombe Fleet

does it not also say in the report about ten years time as i read it, are we not over reacting, to something that may never be, but in saying that having been going to stonbridge road as a fleet fan for 40 years, the only thing that would stop that is anything to do with millwall football club, would rather support Dartford than be associated with millwall.

Forget the Millwall thing, it would be against FA rules, which I believe were further revised to prevent another MK Dons scenario.

Bluewater / Ebbsfleet isn't not in Millwall's existing conurbation.

As for any name change.....

.....like others have said, I'm sure the supporters of the two seperate sides felt the same back in 1946.

But things move on, times change and sometimes businesses (and a full-time professional club is a business) have to rebrand. The product will still be there, even if the name has changed.

Personally I think it would be a great idea & if we could tap into the eurostar branding (via means of sponsorship by them) to go with it then it would be a very shrewd move by the club.

People want the club to progress yet at the same time they want the club to stand still?

Manchester United were called Newton Heath a very long time ago.....

If We were sponsored by ANN SUMMERS as suggested, does that mean we can run out onto the pitch to the sounds of good vibrations ??? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/affig.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/affig.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/affig.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/icon_band222.gif" alt="" />

Where do I start spelling or lack of knowledge? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Eurostar is not the same company as Eurotunnel.

Or would you prefer the club to go back to being sponsored by the global name that is 'Gravesend Reporter' or would you prefer 'Mr Ham Man'?

I'm just highlighting some possibilities for the future.
Want to become big then perhaps the club needs to think big.
Sounds to me like Brian and the board are.

Obviously.

But you said 'eurotunnel and their trains.'

Eurotunnel is one company and runs the 'cars through the tunnel' service which is no where near Ebbsfleet.

Eurostar is a passenger train company and will be running trains through Ebbsfleet.

Therefore you stand corrected.

All this because I suggested an attempt to attract sponsorship from Eurostar!
