Serious Question ....

<blockquote><font class="small">Quote merv:</font><hr />

I seriously think that Canvey will make Conference either this season or next.

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/thefinger_red.gif" alt="" /> This season? Presumably the plan is to lull the rest of the league into a false sense of security first? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/thefinger_red.gif" alt="" />

Although lots of people like to come onto this board to hurl insults at Jeff King

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/thefinger_red.gif" alt="" /> Surely not? Who'd hurl insults at such a charming gentleman? Clearly some people still haven't seen the light <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/thefinger_red.gif" alt="" />

After all, if the locals wanted to watch league football Southend is on the doorstep and the London clubs are not much further.

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/thefinger_red.gif" alt="" /> Well if you can't compete with Saaaffend <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/thefinger_red.gif" alt="" />

entrance + programme + few beers for under £20

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/thefinger_red.gif" alt="" /> Not too many beers though after being mugged at the turnstiles. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/thefinger_red.gif" alt="" />

I respect your opinion George. I don't agree with it, but I am pleased that you continue to have the right to post it. The purpose of this discussion board is for us all to put over our own points of view. You don't have to agree with me, in fact it's quite healthy that you don't.

Just one point to take issue with you over, and that is the cost of admission at Park Lane. It's very difficult to say which club has the least expensive admission price because so many clubs nowadays put together a package which makes genuine comparison quite difficult. At Canvey on a Saturday, in spite of the single adult price of £9, I can go in with my 15 year old son and buy a pint of Kronenburg for a total of £11.50 (My entrance £9 + son 'Kid for a Quid' £1 + Matchday pint special price £1.50 = £11.50).

When we went to Slough the other week the same package cost £7 for me, £7 for the 15yr old plus £2.00 for a pint of lager. Total £16. Now obviously not everyone fits into that profile so although I am a winner, others may not be.

I know that you say you are not John Crawshaw under a different name but this is something else that the two of you have in common - he did rather go on and on about. Perhaps you have discussed it with him in the library?

In the meantime, thanks again for contributing to the discussion. Like I say, I don't agree with the points you make, but there is always room for another point of view, no matter how it is put across.

I'm pleased that you are impressed by the Park Lane 'bargain basement' deals. It's nice to read a positive comment from you on anything Canvey and you are to be commended on it. Wasn't too difficult was it?

The money saved probably won't go to the church roof fund, but to a very special little girl that one of the players (Steve Parmenter) is trying to raise funds for at the moment. She has leukemia and we all hope that collectively we can make a difference.

Good idea pabird. Don't quite know how we proceed from here though. The little girl is is Candy Bloomfield and she is four years old. Sadly she is suffering from leukemia and Parms has already raised over £300 to help her. For the time being, I'll suggest that anyone who wants to help can simply give in some money, either to one of the bar staff or to one of the girls in the club shop, saying that it is for Candy.

Not much of an idea, I know. If anyone can come up with something better, please let me know and I will organise something. Either post here or contact me direct at mervyn@canveyfc.com

As much as I like coming on these boards giving you lot stick at the end of the day it's just a laugh, there are far more important issues in life and the plight of this four year old girl puts many things into perspective. I'd be only too happy to stick a cheque in the post presumably I send it to Steve Parmenter care of the club and make it payable to the appeal fund? Football fans, particularly non league, are generally a fairly decent bunch and I would think away fans at Park Lane would be only too happy to chip in.

I'll have some of that.

I hope to speak to Steve Parmenter today at the Purfleet game. Several other non-league fans have emailed me directly offering support and I will try and find out the best way to go from here.

Will report back here as soon as I can.

Sorry it is taking so long to get details of this one published. No home game for a while has meant that I still haven't spoken directly to Parms.

I understand that he raised his £300 some time ago and it went, together with other fundraising activities, towards sending Candy to Disneyland. This has now been achieved. Keith Johnson was asked to put the thank you in one of the Canvey match programmes but again, with a run of away games, by the time it was published it was a bit out of date.

Parms is still raising money for Candy and if anyone wants to contribute, the best way is to hand money over the counter to the supporters club shop, or over the bar to Sue or Joan or, of course, directly to Parms himself. As I understand it, there is no facility set up to receive cheques which makes it a bit difficult for those unable to get to the ground to make a contribution. I have had several emails from people who want to give and George has expressed an interest on these pages.

If anyone wants to send money, it will have to be on trust. Either send me a cheque (for which I will send a receipt) and I will hand the cash over to Parms, or send a fiver in an envelope to Parms via Park Lane. I realise that may not be the most practical way of doing things, but I am open to any better suggestions.

Anything sent to me ought to come to Mervyn Pocock, 28, Orange Road, Canvey, SS8 8JJ.
