Serious Question ....

Recommended Posts

I know I'm normally on here taking the piss, but I was just wondering where you think you'll be in a few years now. The reason i say this is I've been watching this level for a few years now and I've seen the likes of Enfeild, Aylesbury, Chesham have a couple of seasons of having a stab at the title but then lose it and in some cases get relegated, as you've lost it this season, do you think you'll ever be there or thereabouts again or is this just the slow slide to the trapdoor????

Bloody hell, a serious question, you feeling ok?

Alright, well, i suppose you deserve a serious answer. I see us getting promoted next season. We've had enough chances for the title but just never managed to grab them.

I think we'll be in the conference, for a good 2 years, before getting promoted. Then 1 year in division 3 before getting relegated.. My mind doesnt go any further than that...

Where do you think YOU will be?

It will take several years but I think eventually we will one way or another reach the Conference and venture further than the M25 for a league match...

One year it will be ours, every season their is an outsider and maybe one year it will be us!

But if we manage to get into the Conference we will be there for a good few seasons before going anywhere. But I would be happy to finish 19th in our first season up there.

Mind you I can see us being a top 6-8 Conference team and spend the next 20 years there. Before the club turns another corner, good or bad.

i think we could survive in the conf..takes some adjustment to play national football, extra expense and probably quite a few of the players being unwilling or unable to devote the extra time required...to get out of there, mm well with the playoffs its has opened up but your talking about doing real non league titans along the lines of yeovil chester donny etc i think we would require that new stadium at the other end of the island to generate the extra dosh requred

morning CANV.

Money and the progress made during the period that money is available

Very few teams generate enough thro the gate and must depend on monies from backers and now days such items as FA cup runs etc

Any club depending on money thro the gate and the bar etc will find its own level but progression would not be an issue

So do we have the catchment area and viable interest from essential foot traffic thro the gate

The big problem is success in the Ryman (fighting at the top / cup runs etc) can generate acceptable crowd levels but mid-table not a lot happening in the conf might not

Following promotion?

We may need a wider support base of backers

And not just for the money Canv, the Conference is already moving towards all of it's sides having League Standard Grounds. All of last season's sides have to have this standard by the end of this season, and us new boys have three years to get there. Now whether this season's promotees will have two years I'm not sure.

Now without getting into a debate on the merits or otherwise of Park Lane, two of the criteria for League Standard are a 6,000 capacity with 1,000 seats under cover, and quite honestly, I don't think Park Lane is simply big enough to incorporate that, whereas I assume that the new stadium will be built above that standard.

What is the progress on that front by the way.

last time i saw the guessed at plans it looked to be 6k odd ground no running track terraces at either end..basically perfect..heard a hint that some thames gateway money may be made available, probably to compensate for the fact that the ground would be in the shadow of an 8 lane bridge to kent ;-) ....

as for park lane i reckon they could bodge the required number of seats in somewhere, probably up behind the current lot there is plenty of space, n chuck a cover over it. but i cant see how 6k could be catered for without knocking up another terrace ... certainly not worth any outlay currently.. maybe we could share basilriccays new ground for a bit.... mind you all irrelavent unless we knock a decent run together

I seriously think that Canvey will make Conference either this season or next. Although lots of people like to come onto this board to hurl insults at Jeff King, the fact is he is an ambitious man who is successful. Like him or not, his business is an enormous success and, eventually, his football club will be as well. Don't let the suitability of Park Lane bother you too much. If improvements are required in order to meet certain criteria, those improvements will be made - they have in the past. If a new stadium is required, one will be built although rumour has it that Conference comes first, stadium will follow.

The biggest problem the club has, in my opinion, is that not enough people in the area want it. The local population is happy to come along to the big prestige matches or top of the table clashes, but pabird is right, mid-table games in the middle of a mediocre season simple won't attract enough fans.

After all, if the locals wanted to watch league football Southend is on the doorstep and the London clubs are not much further.

What is attractive to the 600 or so faithful is being part of a small successful club, being on first name terms with the players and having a drink with them in the bar, entrance + programme + few beers for under £20 and no crowd trouble. Plus the ability to get to away games without having to take several days of work or hire Concorde.
