In my view however, I do not think that Accrington are the best side seen at Stonebridge Road so far this season. That honour belongs to Morecambe.

Indeed - a rather strange thing to say, given that they had quite a lot of attacking possession with virtually no end product, save from one slightly fortunate save from Holloway that bounced up onto the roof of the net, and Twiss' shocking close range missed chance.

To me, though, they don't look as good as past champions like Barnet and Yeovil - although I suppose it's difficult to gain an accurate impression solely from the two games you play against them per season. Still, the fact that they're so far clear illustrates to me that the division is somewhat weaker than it has been in recent seasons.

True or not, we're not really ready for promotion, as Graham says above. Strangely, of course, if we were to go up in the next couple of years, the club would be in the unusual position of having to greatly renovate an old ground (i.e. bring the seating capacity up to 2,000 by the end of our third year following promotion) that they are hoping to vacate for a brand new one only a further couple of years down the line.

To me, though, that was one of those strange games in which we didn't have to play particularly well and everything just went right for us (e.g. Charlie scoring with his backside).

I don't think anyone's played as well against us this season as, say, Carlisle did last year at Stonebridge Road - but, as Slarti says, Exeter and Stevenage looked strong.

The reason they can do that, is unlike us they use both sides of the pitch so have width, where as we are inclined to follow the ball. The times our right flank is totally empty is (yes depending which way we are kicking)unbelievable, leaves us unable to hit cross field balls,or pull there defences wide to attack through the middle. so we hit it left or lose it in the mid field, at times a good third to half of the pitch is empty except there players, who use that room against us, surely our playing staff must notice this week after week.sometimes standing on the terraces you need binoculars to see the game as it,s all down the opposite side.I realise i will get a lot of flack for this post, but is how I feel.I want to see us use all of the pitch and stretch there defences across the park.

Maybe the answer to providing more width is giving Fuller a go. Having only seen him at length in a reserve match, I can't say for sure whether this would benefit the team, but against Accy we had Slatter (not a natural wide player, for all the commendable levels of effort he put in on Friday) filling in on the left. It was a little surprising to see Bradley instantly recalled after suspension, meaning that Jacko's enforced absence through injury ultimately required more changes to a winning midfield at Kiddy than just the one.

Is a matter of being players being allocated a zone and making it there own, is not just front men that go for a walk but defenders as well,I feel we leave the whole flank undefended, and the opposition use this space to attack us.Our defenders then has a lot of ground to cover just to get back to there proper zones, one of the biggest examples of this is when the opposition take a goal kick, the play goes down one side of the pitch.Mind you if I was any good would be the manager and not a supporter I guess

Slighty dissappointed about Fridays result. Thought we should of won it on effort and attempts alone. We looked good going forward, but defensively very weak, but then again so did Accrington. Certainly not the best side we've seen this season at Stonebridge Road.

Also, what was going on during the second half with the stewards? I heard something about Accrington fans in the home end?

I agree with your point about not using both sides of the pitch enough. Perhaps we don't have the players yet who can achieve this or perhaps it's a managerial decision. I also agree that there was an element of luck in the first A S goal and the second was a defensive "lapse", in so far as the defenders failed to come out on top in attempting to tackle the forward, but Mullin took his goal well. Their third goal was the result of being able to break very quickly on the counter attack and was very well taken. Although they are obviously a fine side, they didn't strike me as being as good as previous Champions elect we have played since our return to the Conference.

Regarding the attendance - the best at home so far this season- I am sure that the club will take this as a successful experiment. While it is financially advantageous to increase gate revenue in the short term with floaters coming to us, the long term goal must surely be to increase our regular supporters who continue to provide our core income eg by buying season tickets etc. I hope therefore that the Directors get the mix right for next season. I know of several regular supporters who find coming to Friday night matches difficult and who might think twice about buying a season ticket if they cannot be guaranteed Saturday football. The Scarborough game on Saturday will be our first home Saturday match for 12 weeks. It will be interesting to discover what the attendance for this game will be after such a long absence.

Finally, does anyone know who " Barry Symonds" is who contributed a "fan's eye view" to the programme? I haven't come across this name before.

If by 'attempts' you mean attempts on goal, Elliot only had one tricky save to make (i.e. the one from Jukebox that squirmed towards the line before being hacked away).

While the first half was pretty even, Accy were clearly superior and more clinical after the break.

With regards to playing Friday or Saturday,

I expect that both Friday night matches have been deemed a success based on the attendance figures.

As such, I suspect there will be more.

However, if our home matches don't clash with Charlton's as much next season as they have this,

combined with performances on the pitch, I think attendances will rise anyway.

Let us not forget that both Friday games were against opposition which would cause some local interest, ie Canvey , with whom we have a local rivalry and some history (in the best possible sense) and in Accrington, who barring a total collapse, are the champions elect.

I suspect we would struggle to get 1500+ on a cold Friday night against Forest Green or Southport.

As has been said, so long as the opposition is suitable (and agreeable), and Charlton/Gillingham are home on Saturday, a few Friday night games are ok, but it should never become the norm.

One thing is certain, one cannot fault the athmosphere - really good.

Barry works with my Dad, and is a lifelong fan. He asked me if he could write a piece for the programme, and I said yes. I'm always open to contribution and new articles. You know the drill. If you have anything you'd like us to consider using, (there's no guarantee it'll get in, it all depends on how much space we have), then either send it to the club, or email it to editor@gnfc.co.uk.
