Sponsored Walk to Harrow!

Ian

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again when we start thinking about the sponsored walk to the last away game of the season! You will recall that last year we raised in excess of £4,000 with half going to the Supporters Trust. Well done to my fellow walkers (Dom, Martin, Graham, Liam and Radders). The achievement last year cannot be underestimated.

In total contrast to last year, when we were faced with a three-day 62 mile trek, this one is the shortest of all the walks undertaken so far with the short trip to Harrow Borough. The first decision however is the route to be taken and we have two options in that respect. If we go by road it's a mere 11.7 miles which, even for the unfit, can be completed in four hours.

Some people however have expressed an interest in following a route along the canals and, whilst it does have some appeal, it also has its drawbacks. Firstly, it will add significantly to the overall distance. As an indication, two years ago we walked to Metropolitan Police via a road route which was 19.1 miles. The previous year's walk to Walton & Hersham (vs Staines) took a river route and was approx. 25 miles, even though it's actually three miles shorter via road than where Met Police play!

Taking the canal route also makes it difficult to plan. I can very easily map out a route, directions, distances and milestones if we take a road route as internet based tools are easily accessible. River/canal routes are more tricky to come by and I really don't have the time, or inclination, to go cycling along towpaths to plan a route.

So.....if there is a real desire to take a river route then I will gladly step aside and let somebody else plan out the details. I would of course join in the walk, I just don't have time to organise it. Alternatively, if people are happy with a fairly unpicture-esque (but short!) route via road then I'll happily sort it out.

Anyone with a great desire to take on the canal route plans or are those planning to walk happy with a road route?

I will certainly be walking to the game. Happy to go with the majority route wise.

I think I would prefer a road route as we will have clear directions, landmarks and precise details on distance. We all know that Ian brilliantly prepared the route last year which helped the rest of us no end. From hearing about past walks (Berkhampstead) the problem is that nobody knew the precise distance which made it a struggle.

i would love to walk to the game too - assuming it gets done on the morning of the game as i cannot take time out from uni, and would also go with the majority on the route as i have experience with walking those sorts of distances.

Hi Martin I will love to do the walk to Harrow and what type of Clouthes do i need to wear for the walk to Harrow? And where will we be starting from? And where will our starting point be? And i think i will be up to do the walk to Harrow with you.

Just spoke to John and he had already done some research. He seems to think it would only add a maximum of 2-4 miles if we were to walk the canal route and it would be a much more enjoyable walk, he is quite happy to plan the route.

I think I would prefer to walk the canal route just because I don’t walk well on roads(as the Worthing walkers will tell you ) but if we do decided to walk the city route we will no doubt be in safe hands if Ian does decide to plan it.

Would be "happy" with either route, and am looking forward to it.
