Final Score: Slough Town 0-1 Hemel Hempstead

Not much change from the first half, with Slough having the majority of the play, but the first half goal from Hemel sub Jack Berry was enough for Hemel to claim their three points in front of a 425 crowd.

Steve Browne was talking after the Totton away game about taking chances. We could/should have been three or four up by the time they scored which was a terrible error from McCann.

Unfortunately, they visibly grew in stature once they scored and from then on it seemed to be one of those days. That said, we'll be unfortunate to face another team for a while who play such industrial football.

There's little point in citing Veli's absence as the cause as we're going to have to get used to that. The players did seem a bit sorry for themselves though.

First home defeat of the season. Very glad that the results kind of went our way. All this talk about McCann being dodgy and then the clanger that won Hemel the game. Let's hope it will not be a regular occurence. At times our defence looked all over the place. Cannot wait for Daly to return and partner Dean Palmer in the middle. Nick Gyoury was caught out way too many times. Too much standing around, ballwatching at times. Barras did well to get forward in the second half. Metcalfe put himself about a bit but seemed to miss Hakki as a partner, and Ryan Spencer had an O.K. game, but couldn't put a stamp on anything. Boot looked well off form and Sammy just didn't get a break. Even after being put clear, he gets dragged to the floor en route to goal. The ref made some laughable decisions.

The turning point for me was the exit of Gilkes after their goal. We never really looked dangerous on the left from then on in. Man of the Match for me goes to Anthony Howard - hit the woodwork 2/3 times and had other efforts either marginally wide or saved. And bloody Hell, where did they get that 'keeper from?

Reflecting, it was just one of those days. On another day we would have stuck away five goals. The ball just didn't run kindly. Yes, of course, we were lacking in areas. But had we won 3v1, noone would have been complaining.

Lets be fair to McCann, yes he let in a Seaman style clanger, but he also made one blinding and one supurb save plus routine stoos and catches. We tend top rember the clanger not the saves.

I dont know about 3-1 we could have won 13 -1 by my count . Howard had 7 good chances, including hitting the bar twice, but also shooting wide twice. That was a symptom of our play today at least six shots from around the area that wern't on target. A great pity that Gilkes went off before we had all the free kicks, as no one else seemed to have practiced them.

The ref was quite good except that he was colour blind - how could he let their keeper start in a yellow shirt, and their subs spend the whole match sitting on the bench in red? He was also totally wrong when Sammy was dragged down - by the letter of the law the defender was the last man and he should have gone. The ref may have deemed that the second defender was close enough to the play to make it only a booking.

Sammy - stop using your elbows and beat the defenders on merit . Thats what you did early in the season, the goals will come.

We looked at our most effective when we got round the bach today, Alvin Bubb was more effective later into the game, we just couldnt get a boot onto the ball (pun certainly intended)

We made two subs, both for injury . I accept that we were making most of the play, but a fresh face can work the oracle. What strikers did we have on the bench? Where is Patterson? What will we do next week. It was good to see Howard attacking down the flanks, but would a striker have done better with some of the possesion we had.

Conclusion: A game we could have and should have won easily . Better today than next week, but we need another proven goal scorer and a midfield genaral if we want to go up

The point is that we only have two strikers - our third is in Australia for five weeks, and our loan signing has dissapeared. We need at least three fit strikers for every match, which means four at the club allowing for injuries and suspensons. At present we have two. Tony has been injured in two of the last three games, and Sammy will get another longer ban if he keeps clocking up bookings.

Your spot on Paul in all you say , cant argue at all , but for a change we are scoring from midfield quite regular and the defence are popping up with a goal or two . Like I said , Saturday was just one of those days !! One thing I totally agree with is Steve Hale . As a semi-pro player , booking 5 weeks away seems bizzarre . Why did he think to do that at that time and why was he allowed to do so ? Ok he may of arranged it b4 he signed for us , but why sign a player who will be missing in what really is an important time of the season . (Important as in Slough have the tradition of dose diving around now !)

Thanks Wayne.

Steve Hale definitely arranged his leave before he signed for us. He said so at Finchley, (when he wasnt even on the bench) We seemed to have arranged cover in the loan from Watford, but he hasn't been seen recently. Injured or what? anyone know? We had a good run with Sammy, then tony took over. Goals from midfield have as you said been vital, and we even have had som help from the defenders at set pieces. But we still need cover, and variation.

No we couldnt have projected a fist round proper spot, yet alone a better than even chance of being in the second round. But surly some of that money would be a good investment, if only to keep the club name in the news.
