perhaps by taking free kicks and penalties he is not providing the service for the forwards who are too short / not good enough anyway....

Can't agree - If i remember right most of his 7 goals to win the golden boot in Japan were open play. Rudi can score from open play, free Kicks and Penalties. Credit where it is due he IS an alrounder. If anything i thought his Free Kicks were weaker and ave improved in recent times.

I don't think LS is criticizing Rudi. He is criticizing the forwards who have not done a good job this season. If they had been taking their chances we would be aiming for the title, not worrying whether we will grab the second automatic promotion spot or have to settle with the play-offs.
