So the two trials in the last week we see The geeky twin brothers and their friend get light sentences of just 9 years each for murdering their own grandmother . The week before we see a group of happy slappers who kicked an innocent man to death just to photo their dispicable lust .Just twelve years each handed out for this scum and 8 years for the girl with the camera/phone.You can bet your A*SE that this lot of scum will be out on the streets in 5 years You can see why they do it as their is no deterrant. THE ONLY WAY FORWARD IS TO REINTRODUCE a lengh of rope and a trap door. I dont know what the majority of decent people think But I've had enough of all this pussy footing about .I would gladly pull the trap door lever myself if it would clean up the scum elements that now live amounst us.

I am opposed to capital punishment, and normally I am wary of cries of hang 'em and flog 'em, chuck away the key and so on.

 

However, I did notice the two cases you describe (and others lately) and yes, I agree. I too was astonished at the short sentences given considering the vile nature of the crimes.

 

What is doubly frustrating is that you know that a bank robber or something gets punished according to the amount nicked - have it away with tens of thousands or more and you're looking at about a 20! Just shows where the priorities are.

Just a note: the twins received sentances of 9 years each. Their "mate" got a longer sentance although I cannot remember exactly how many years. The reason for this was that in that case the "mate" killed the Grandmother whilst the brothers ransacked the house. The twins were therefore not charged or convicted of murder.

 

In the other case the problem again is that the attackers could not be convicted of murder. They will therefore each have been convicted of a lessor crime.

 

Had the attackers been convicted of murder the sentances would have been longer.

 

That is not to say that I agree with the decisions in those cases. The criminal justice system is being faced with an ever increasing problem in that the public rightly wants to see stiffer sentances but there is simply not enough room to house prisoners. It does not help that every time a new prison is proposed everyone becomes a NIMBY.

They were not convicted of murder and therefore were not sentanced to life. Bentley was convicted of murder because he "incited" the crime which qualifies as aiding and abetting - the Bentley case is clearly a gross injustice.

 

Murder now carries a mandatory life sentance but there is a requirement for a recommendation when the prisoner should be considered for release. Personally I am in favour of the proposals to alter the law on homicide which has been around since 1869 and to bring in different categories of murder/manslaughter. This should allow for clearer sentancing guidelines which will be easier for the public to understand.

The real issue is that the "authorities" believe they know best and public opinion counts for zero

Government protects or changes law; Government is made up of MPs who owe their living to the voters who put them into employment

Of course those MPs must have strongly held views that they live by but in areas where public opinion is strongest that opinion must be taken into account

It is not taken into account. Proof of how public opinion is ignored can be seen in the manner that sex offenders against minors have been allowed back into the teaching fraternity by those very same MPs.

What is the point of giving a life sentence to someone who has murdered someone then letting them out after 15 years enabling them to then lead a relatively 'normal' life.

 

Look at the 'Bulger' murderers. Not only have they been let out but now have new identities and new lives. I believe the little f*ckers knew exactly what they were doing and should never have been let out.

You're not overly concerned about miscarriages of justice then, which in the case of capital punishment carry a sentence that cannot be reversed?
