No, no, please let then appointment Glen Roeder as permanent manager then I can laugh helplessly as he sends those Geordie tw*ts (twits?) to certain relegation, just like he did at West Ham and every other club he's managed. I hate NUFC with a real passion, albeit slightly less than Arsenal (hee, hee ,hee, 2-3 to the cockney boys!)but still want them to crash and burn. I've never forgotten getting half a Toon housebrick in the side of my head back in the late 70's. Crash and burn, you b*st*rds

Whether you love Souness or hate him, he was always on a hiding to nothing at the poison challice that is Newcastle United.

It is easy to point the finger and blame him for their current situation, yes I know a number of his transfer dealings (both in and out) have been questionable (but you could say that about most Premiership managers at one time or another) and yes I know he has spent the best part of around £50m. But in his defence he has lost many of his squad to long term injuries (whatever he has done he cannot be held responsible for injuries), many of the Newcastle players need to have a long hard look at their own performances this season and question whether they have let Souness down (my feeling are that most should answer yes to that question) and I would question as to whether his position has been undermined by a certain Mr. Shearer?? Who's priority has always been looking after number one (not good in a team situation) and who has always seemed to be working to his own hidden agenda.

That said Newcastle supporters always seem to think that it is their devine right to be 'up there' with Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. Newcastle's supporters, I am afraid, suffer from a totally unrealistic vision of grandeur and are in need of a serious reality check.

It doesn't matter who the manager is, until they get rid of the idiots on the board, namely Shepherd and Hall the current situation will repeat itself again and again, just ask all of the previous managers.

Perhaps they should give the job to Shearer? Then and only then will Newcastle get a sense of reality.

The season prior to West Ham's relegation, they finished 7th in the Premiership under Roeder. So he started well at least, which would be ideal for the short-termist approach to managers favoured by Newcastle.

However, one player whom Souness hasn't lost to injury is Jean-Alain Boumsong, whom he paid £9m for despite the fact no-one else was in for him and Rangers got him for nothing the season before, and who, despite being pretty inept in defence, was played week in, week out by Souness.

The usual suspects will be lined up in the press, but one manager who definitely will not get a call is Mick at The Stadium of Light. Compared with him, Souness has been really very successful.

A pretty stupid thing to say.

McCarthy is an excellent manager working with a poor squad of young players with no money to spend. He is an honest man (something of a rarity.)who speaks his mind and wears his heart on his sleeve. His book about his time as manager of Eire is well worth a read.

Souness on the other hand comes across as a bit of an arrogant git.

I once had the pleasure (?) of spending an hour or so in his company. It doesnt rank amongst the highlights of my life! I can well understand how he has lost the respect of his players.

The only good thing he did was to unload that t****r Bellamy, a man who you would not get tired of running over.

£1.8m Jon Stead's really banging the goals in, isn't he? Still, point taken.

I disagree. It wasn't stupid at all, not if you understand the antipathy that exists between Geordies and Mackems. I don't doubt McCarthy's honesty (and he seems like a decent bloke), but are you implying that Souness is dishonest? An "arrogant git" he might be, but it is McCarthy's name that will be in the record book as being manager of the two sides (albeit the same club) with the lowest points tally in the Premiership's history. Hardly a selling point for his CV as manager for another club is it?

A fair point, but you have to bear in mind the fact that, with the probable exception of Watford a few years ago he has had just about the least ammount of money to spend on improving the squad of any Premiership club. And I think you will agree that the top tier of English football is just about ALL about money at the moment.

I think the fact that McCarthy spent £1.8m on a player who was having an awful time at his previous club, but was the only striker who was willing to go there for the money on offer, says it all!

Would be interested to hear what B.B has to say about Stead as he was a bit of a prodigy at Huddersfield and has failed to fufil his potential BIG TIME!

I'm not claiming that McCarthy is some sort of a Messiah, far from it. But I believe he is a far better manager and person than Souness. Which one would you prefer to have a beer with?

And yes my opinion of Souness being an arrogant git is based on my personal experience of him! As for being dishonest? I'm not saying that at all. I just think he is a crap manager who has wasted Newcastles time and money!

Some interesting points. You describe Souness as "a crap manager". Given that he has followed several other failures in this position, isn't this the fault of the chairman and his fellow directors who seem to be making a habit of appointing people who in their eyes simply don't deliver the goods quickly enough, ie a title or cup? Yet I was very surprised on MotD last night when several of the supporters who were asked who should be appointed in place of Souness said Kevin Keegan! He can never finish a job!

Souness did seem to have bad luck with injuries to key players and this certainly didn't help him. The one thing he seemed "good" at was panic buying players who proved unable to add anything new to the team.

On the money is everything part of your post, generally I would agree, although Wigan somewhat confound this stereotype at the present time.
