A bit different, Laz. Went down on the Blue Pullman, full breakfast on the train then a tour of Portsmouth historic dockyard inc. harbour cruise, HMS Victory, Warrior and the Mary Rose. Didn't go up the Spinnaker Tower as the queue was too long but next time maybe. Then back on the train and dinner with a drink or two. Very civilised, just like being on the supporters' club coach really (not!).

A good day out indeed, Rob.

If anyone is planning a day trip to the dockyard at Portsmouth, it's all good and you should try to fit in a visit to the Submarine Museum, too. It's on the other side of the bay to HMS Victory etc. and some of the launches which take the trippers around the harbour will stop there and collect later in the day.

Here's a quiz question for you. Most people think that Lord Nelson's final signal from HMS Victory on the morning of the Battle of Trafalgar was "England expects etc. etc." It wasn't. He ordered the signal flag raised once more after that one as the fleet turned towards the French line. What was the very last signal from the flagship prior to action?

Quite right Stan. And he kept the signal flying throughout the action.

In all the excitement I had forgotten that I had set the question yesterday. Brings a lump to the throat. [That's the message that brings a lump to the throat, not that I had forgotten about the quiz. You knew what I meant.]

If you're interested Stan, I've got lots more pictures of warships... t'was a shame to see HMS Invincible in such a sorry state though (soon to become the SS Onion Bhaji or some such) and a couple more up for the scrap merchant.

Good news though was there are expected to be a whole fleet of new ships coming through by about, er, 2013.

'Engage the enemy more closely' should be our rallying cry when we're 3-0 up and sit back letting the oppos back into the game.

I had a week-end break in Falmouth last year Rob. Lovely part of the world - found my second 'dream job' [second after being the man who operates a stop/go sign at road works]. I could drive the Falmouth - St Mawes ferry! It's about 25 minutes as I recall. You can see from one side to the other. It's about the size of a tug. Holds about 80 passengers. How difficult can that be?

Anyway. Where was I? Oh yes. We did the tourist thing and took a couple of trips on the rivers. Upriver towards Truro is very deep water apparently and there were three merchant vessels which had been moored there for 3/4 years! No work, as the driver of the ferry announced over the tannoy thing.

It's a bit far for a day trip Rob, but worth a three-day break.
