Hi

Reading Rebel sounds like the football has been a bit up and down with penalties all round. Then their is the little matter with Sven what ever you say he has to stay for World Cup

but who cares it is fantastic out here in Brazil it,s hot hot hot.

They are preparing to be crowned winners once again so does it matter if he stays or goes.

Have watched a game on tv out here the crowd was sparse the defending very poor standard of the game was very poor not what I expected from Brazilian players, thought I was watching a Ryman,s league match so on what I have seen we can still call ourselves BRAZIL of the Ryman League.

Think he means John Delaney as in:

"His name is John Delaney, he's the leader of the team

The greatest football team the world has ever seen,

Their name it is the Rebels, and at football they're the best

And when we win the League this year

Remember what we said,

La, La, La ,La, etc"

Captain in the sixties if I remeber correctly, England Amateur international, in 1972 (?), part of the great Rebels team of Reynolds, Hatt, Stephens, Delaney, etc

A: 'Cos he was brilliant.

My (ie the real) John Delaney was playing in the early 1970's. He must have been in the Welsh team with John Toshack. I think he ended his days playing for Bangor FC.

All this was twenty years before I started supporting the Rebels - so no apologies.

Anyone remember Brian Lucas? He lives near a friend of mine in Beaconsfield and apparently still plays a good game of squash.

The real John Delaney was a class act for the REBELS he is not the the same one as you mentioned Rod.

To my knowledge Delaney is an Irish name.

Believe he went on to play for Bournemouth also in the Slough side at that time were the Hartridge brothers and Micky Bell amongst others.

Only Slough player I know who played for Wales and became captain was Eric Young who was also a top class defender he played for Wimbledon and I believe Crystal Palace as did Dave Kemp who scored goals where ever he went.

ah! john delaney-truly great centre half-played for Q.P.R youth in goal-then outfield for slough, wycombe, reading, bournmouth and england non league-in all those years since( and we have had some very good centre backs) only mickey droy( chelsea) terry angus ( fulham) and eric young (brighton-crystal palace-wimbledon-wolves) stand close.

yes you do get mixed up the great keith mead and equaly great jeff bateman( 50 times better than steve bateman, no relation either)never played together! jeff bateman cold have been a pro anytime he liked-but preferred his job and family life.that's why he gave up when we went into the conference league.

Steve Bateman was manager of Chesham before Dennis Greene and was a decent enough centre back but never a "great."

No one.

I was just passing on my opinion. The reason that "great" was in inverted commas is because it is an objective word and it suited the implication of my statement.
