I am not sure, I think you mean the 5 bells at Chartridge, which was bought by one of Chesham's many ex-Chairmen and sold on as a property. One of my pals parents just sold their 4 bedroom Bungalow for £500,000, property in and around Chesham is big money, probably similar to St Albans.

The pubs at Ley Hill are The Crown, The Swan and The Hen & Chickens. My favourite being the Crown on a Sunny afternoon. If you like those type of pubs you could try Bellingdon, Harwich or St Leonards (they're all in a loop between Chesham's vale and Tring).

No was definately Ley Hill. There's a lane called "Tylers Lane" opposite the Hen and Chickens. It was about 400 yards down the lane on the right.

I last went there about 1994 and was refused service for wearing jeans! I uttered a few expletives and left.

Ahh, you live in a town for 22 years and you still don't know it (well, more specifically me). I have to confess I've not been there, mind you in 1994 I was 16 so, it's more likely I was on the cider!! What a horrible way to start your drinking experience...

But come to think of it I think I may have got it half right. The old chairman definately owned and converted a pub called the five bells, so it does tie in with what you're saying. I reckon I must be confusing the Chartidge pub.

Without giving away too much about my age, I used to go there quite a long time ago and it was an excellent pub. When I visited in 1994, or thereabouts, it was totally different. I seem to recall someone saying some pro golfer had taken it over, but I don't know it that is true.

Who was your chairman at that time. I remember in 1992/93, Chesham pipped us for the title, and had half decent squad, possibly with George Borg involved in some way.

About the same time as my earlier visit, I visited the "Sportsman". What a dump, full of bikers. Is it the same still?

92/93 was post Borg, the manager was a welshman called Gerald Applin, Chairman back then was Tony Applin. We were ranked the 5th best team in non league that season, someone gave me that stat and I'd tend to believe it. We had the best non-league keeper I have ever seen in Andy Lomas, Two excellent centrebacks and Chris '42 but goals 700 offsides' Townsend, how the mighty have fallen.

The chairman who took over the five bells was David Pembroke.

The Sportsman is a sh??hole, don't go there, on any account, you might catch something. The cemetary opposite has a better atmosphere.

I assume the Applins were related!

Andy "the Cat" Lomas played for you for some time. I remember him being injured at City the year you were relegated. He later played for us. At the end of season, he jumped up on a table in the clubhouse to dance, such was the applause that he repeated the trick. Unfortunately, the table collapsed leaving him on the floor.
