Reasons to hate Stockport

It's true there are some misguided locals who believe themselves to be Mancunian and that's the worst thing. 300,000 people live in Stockport and we can only 5-6000 down to Edgeley Park, partly because too many of the residents are glory-seekers (and yes, I do include the real Manc side in that!!). Doesn't help that we were crap for 20 years from 1970-90 admittedly, but even so! Best moment of the past 3 seasons? 1-0 down at EP v the Mancs who were running away with the league whilst we were rock bottom and having the worst season in our history. 5 minutes left - equaliser. Last minute - winner <img src="/forums/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> The place was going mental as the away end disappeared off to the buses and their Stockport suburbs!

What's the story then? Because my wife (who used to live in Stockport) and I have been disagreeing about this as long as we've known each other??

 

She reckons it's in Cheshire - I think it's Greater Manchester.

Greater Manchester doesn't exist as a county anymore and was a b@st@rd county anyway. You find it covers certain administration areas for convenience sake, such as the Police Force and Fire Service, but there's no Greater Manchester County as there is Cheshire. Strictly Stockport is no longer in Cheshire either, being hived off in that 1974 Act I mentioned earlier. But if you want to know why we're called Stockport County, it's because when we became Stockport County it was the year the town and area was made a county borough of Cheshire. No amount of f***ing about by civil servants can change that! Hence we're not Mancs and we consider the town to be a Cheshire town.

 

So sadly, your wife is right!!

I should imagine Greater Manchester does need it's own police force, I should imagine salford also have one of their own as well
