Charlie MacDonald

Nice one!

Great News for the fleet, nice to know we have at least one quality and experienced striker under our belt for next season.

Also nice to know LD is being very protective and rightly so of him, and also us being the envy of many clubs!

We have a really solid spine to the team - Craig, Smith/Smith/Bowry/Saunders/McKimm/MacDonald. Let us build on this and get some proper signed contracted players for next season, to go with our current signed up squad - none of these short term loan players -and press on for a play off spot in 2006/2007.

Brilliant news about Charlie.

We have been deamanding a 20 goal striker since the Portway days, the pity is our other strikers do not appear to know how to.

The unfortunate thing this year, CG,is that we have been lacking regular goals from midfielders to back up Charlie, which hasnt been the case in previous seasons. Jay was second top scorer last year, but his appearances have been restricted this year for one reason or another - I would hope he can get a decent opportunity to show his ability both in midfield and as a goalscorer again in the near future.

Quite apart from being a fantastic move by the club to have secured him this early in the season, full credit to Charlie for signing on the dotted line. I bet many players in his situation would hedge their bets until the summer and see what was on offer then.

Quite surprising that he did, as well - games like Boreham Wood, where he was head and shoulders above much of the rest of the team, are probably a bit demoralizing.

Great news though - and equally great news about Ross.

Excellent news that the club have been able to persuade both Macdonald and Smith to extend their contracts for another season. I would now suggest that the same discussions, they may be going-on already, begin to retain the services of Gooding, Bowry and Holloway.

I do despair however that after 50% of the season, Macdonald is effectively the only striker on the club's books. Yes, I know Daish is claiming that he has spoken to others, "but they want silly money", but the question has got to be asked as to why other clubs don't appear to have the same problem. Here we are just 10 days or so before the transfer window closes again, with one striker who is doing well (MacDonald), another who is apparantly so highly rated by the manager that he doesn't play him (Moore) and another on loan who appears to be totally disinterested (Coleman). It looks like 'as you were' then for the rest of the season, unless something drastic happens before the end of January.

Absolutely. A professional who puts other so called pros to shame. A team player through & through: not just a poacher, always tracks back, even to be found clearing from his own line on occasion. Always puts in 100%. My player of the season (from Ross Smith) so far. If we ever have a squad full of players as good at their job as Charlie is and with his work ethic and team player mentality we'll walk the Conference National.

Oh boys !

I hate to p*ss on your firework ..... BUT

Why do you all assume that by getting Charlie to sign an extension to his contract that it means he will stay ?

This is normal policy to ensure that at the end of the season he can't walk away for nothing and even at this stage, we could demand a higher transfer fee for him.

This is what normally happens when the player involved is a reasonable sort of guy and agrees that he will sign the contract, provided that when a club come in for him he can go. Both parties are happy, he goes where he wants to and the club are financially better off.

Maybe its just now that the Board are starting to understand the wacky world of football contracts, transfers etc etc.

Oh course I hope I'm totally wrong!

We don't, but it's a step in the right direction and as you say, if he doesn't stay, someone has to pay for him. But as I've already said, he didn't have to sign it now and could simply have done a Mark Bentley and walked at the end of the season. I appreciate you err on the side of pessimism/realism, Red, but just this once... be happy!

Realism Stu !

Indeed, as I said, I agree its an excellent move forward but don't get carried away.

And as for being happy ..... was you at Borehamwood last Saturday ? I was, and I was far from happy !

I was distraught, like all the other fans there, which why we were all amazed and bemused when the Chairman joined us full of the joys of spring, grinning and laughing just after half time.

Perhaps we all care too much.

After all "football isn't a matter of life and death" is it ?

As Meat Loaf once sang, 'don't be sad/'cause two out of three ain't bad'.
