It could very well be, which goes a long way towards explaining why it's hard to get excited about it any more. I still remember a famour Portway-less victory against Gillingham's 2nd string at Priestfield & a thrashing at a freezing cold Valley where Lee Bowyer, gloves & all, was a major thorn in our side.

It was good. Not the end of the world if you lost, but great if you won, especially against a stronger team, whereas now we're theoretically the strongest team in the competition.

Yes - and judging by the low crowds and under-strength teams evident in the LDV in recent seasons, it's quite possible that the status of being good enough to qualify for it is more important than playing in the competition itself.

Put Saturday behind us (except the lessons we've learnt from it!) I'd put money on a 2000+ gate (The interest in year10 at Gravesend Grammar has been amazing!) Start with Moore and SuperMac up front, Jimmy on instead of Johnson, and we could be in for a good night! Plus an electric atmosphere, that's what all my mates look forwards to the most!

Interesting what you say about the gate. I think it will dwindle below 1,000 but if any fixture this season will reach the golden 2,000 then it's this one and what do I know, it may well reach it.

Reckon Grays will be decent crowd as well, H. Even more local than Canvey,on a better night for football, and they have a bigger away support than Canvey.

Aldershot will still be a decent gate, even though Aldershot are lower mid table.

 

Hereford should be decent as well, although it will suffer from being midweek.
