Harrow Borough Reserves v WEFC reserves

From a spectators point of view it must be difficult for the managers to have any consistency in the pattern of play when the squad changes from week to week but last night the reserves again gave their all and did not deserve to loose 2 nil. The game started and for the first 20 minutes WEFC should have had three goals, were playing the better football and Harrow were just hacking it anywhere for safety. The referee and lino were not giving WEFC any leaway in their desisions and both had poor games. The first goal was a mistake in defence when the ball was thrown out by Gardener to a central defender who lost control and was tackled by Harrow striker, lost out in the tackle and the striker scored. The second half was the same pattern with the WEFC defence on top, when Abbo put in a tackle, said something to the Ref who pulled out a straight red, this seemed to lift the 10 men who should have again scored on a number of occassions with a couple of one on ones only to shoot straight at their keeper who made four good saves denying Windsor a deserved victory. Harrows second goal was right near the 90minutes when a through ball split the defence and Gardener was one on one made a good save low down but the ball rebounded and the striker put it into an empty net. A few positives was the return of Will Dunlop and the No 6 for Windsor who showed to be a good find,Others were prominent but Windsor lack some height and strength up front and a goal scorer, shame that Cox has left for Flackwell. with only two subs on the bench was surprised no first team had a run out.

Please don't take this as having a go, just trying to answer your 'question'.

The reason that for no first teamers is due to the fact that they are currently running a squad that only just completes a team sheet.

This is due to injuries suffered over the past couple of months and it would only take one challenge to leave them with even less players.

Once everyone is fully fit and a couple of players have been added then i am sure that you will see a few first teamers given a run out in the reserves.

To complement the previous report, WEFC squad was as follows : Iain Gardiner; Daryl Elford; Will Dunlop; Lee Smith; Paul Abbott; Daniel Blatchford (Craig Turner 85); Omar Maqsood; Obi Chukwu; Dave Case (Lee Meakes 75); Abi Nsubuga; Chris Shepherd.

Five of the 13 were making their first appearances.

Although Harrow were lively upfront, WEFC dominated the match and played good football throughout. The officials were appalling. Certainly, the referee was the worst, by far, that we have seen this season. The only criticism of the team in the first half was an individual error by our last defender which cost the first goal. Apart from that, WEFC were excellent but just could not convert any of the numerous chances created. The second half was the same until Abbott got sent off, with no justifiable reason. Even then, you could not tell that WEFC were a man short as they continued to dominate and create chance after chance. It was only in the last 15 minutes that WEFC understandably ran out of steam, and the second goal at the end just rubbed salt into the wounds. The Harrow manager apologised after the game and said that WEFC had deserved to win. Will Dunlop made an impressive return, and Obi Chukwu dominated the midfield with Omar Maqsood. With a number of injured absentees; 5 debutants; one new player failing to appear; and a number of teenagers in the squad, WEFC can be extremely pleased with the performance, although much frustrated about the unfair scoreline.

I was also there and thought the three officials were very poor, ref just liked to be seen and heard, linos not quick enough to keep up with play.Would like to ask the ref why he booked the Windsor stiker going direct at goal, at pace to be brought down on the 18 yard line by the last Harrow defender, both fell inside the box. Could have been a penalty, certinly a red card for the defender only for the Windsor strike to be given the free kick and a yellow' The lino in front of me made no indication at all but said the ref had got it right for diving, Sums up Widsors night as the free kick was gently lobbed towards the keeper.

Personally, I have no problem with there being no first team players in the reserves.

The reserves are as good as (alright, maybe a little biased, but certainly a match for) any true reserve team they have played this year.

They need as much experience as they can get, and an opportunity to prove themselves worthy of the chance of getting into the first team squad.

its already a very young squad average age about 20/21 i should think the reason for wanting a couple of first team is to steady the ship when under pressure,to guide the kids into positioning, and a bit of the physical strenght when needed. Yea the kids did well and are fully committed to the managers calls but not push them to hard physically against some stronger men as the front two a very small but work their socks off.I think it was C

You can debate the merits of running a reserve team; be it a youth team, and therefore feeder for new players into the first team; a vehicle for letting first team squad members who are not getting a game to play a full match; or to allow first teamers coming back from injury a ‘gentler’ introduction back to 90 minutes. I think in all cases the result of the game is not critical.

However there are some facts beyond debate

1) Age is not an issue!

There are so many examples of very young players in the football league, and playing at the highest level, there is no point is starting to list them.

Experience is an issue, and there is only one way to get that, by playing at the highest possible level. You will never know if youngsters are good enough if they are not given an opportunity!

2) Players on the wrong side of 30 struggle with pace and stamina, they cannot match the legs of an 18-25 year old.

your last sentence is a load of bo////ks tell that to Henry that hes to slow at 30.or did you mean 40 years, most players are still in their prime at thirty, its the first 10 yards that count not the 100,meters but then lunch box was overv 30 when he won gold sprinting, there are exceptions Rooney and a couple more but look at your first team average age 27 plus

It isn’t ********!

You obviously know very little about football, if you did you would know that the vast majority of football leagues teams have players under the age twenty in their squads. Ignoring the very high profile examples of the likes of Rooney and Owen, look at the general ages of players in league teams, there are so many not to warrant listing. Wrong side of 30 – read over 35.

Henry – Arsenal - about to be joined by Theo Walcott, how old is he,16, and playing regularly for Southampton, where did he get his experience from?

The reason players retire from football isn’t because they get fed up getting paid good money, or they loose ability, it’s the legs!

A Football match is 90 minutes, not 100 yards

Why is it that most football academies fail to produce all these young players then, they have the pick of the country, and possibly wider but are cast aside as not being good enough buy the time they are twenty. only the exceptional ones make the grade, you are vertually saying if you can run fast for 90 minutes you will make the grade. dont consider Beckham to be quick, owen has lost a yard inpace but still makes the grade Shearer is not quick and never has beenObviously experience can only come with playing a better standard but require some old heads to show them the error of their ways
