FA Cup - Slough Old Boys

Was also a player in the 94/95 season for a few games before heading off on his managerial career. Quite responsible for Steve Browne's managerial 'nous' as well, and although I wasn't around watching Slough at the time, I understand he wasn't much appreciated at the club during his reign.

Roberts really did set the trend for pissing money away in a ridiculous fashion and "groomed" Browne as his replacement. Roberts was not really helped by the fact that he was brought in to replace the incredibly popular Paul Hardyman who was not given a proper opportunity to manage the club or spend Deaner's money despite leading a scratch side to victory over soon to be champions Sutton. The removal of Hardyman and the installation of a big name, big spending manager was the first of many mistakes made by Martyn Deaner.

Well I have five/six matches from the 90's, all bar one is Slough getting beaten, usually heavily!, by Colchester, which were from a AFC Dons fan who had filmed the matches a while back and kindly allowed me to put them in on a 'Blasts From The Past' style DVD. The other match is the Sutton Utd vs Slough match in that memorable win.

I think Graham Roberts is a decent manager if you like his style (Borg-esque). Can't agree that he ruined Kemp's work as this was carried out by Les Briley.

Unfortunately for GR, Mr. Deaner just didn't have deep enough pockets to support the crazy money splashed around in 1998/9. Arguably if he'd been a bit more pragmatic we could have paid our way for longer without falling out with players and the Thornes through cash flow issues.
