AFC Wimbledon programme article

Would any of you be willing to write an article for the AFC Wimbledon programme? I've been asked by Ray Armfield at AFCW, below is the email he sent me, if you're interested leave a reply on the forum or email me at: programme@sloughtownfc.net

I wondered if any Rebels supporter might like to write an article for the AFCW programme for the fixture at Kingsmeadow at the end of January? Wherever possible we've tried to incorporate a page written by a visiting supporter this season entitled 'The Other View' and ideally I'd be looking for around 500 words on anything Slough related - maybe how your season is going, any star players we should be looking out for, and even what your general perceptions of AFC Wimbledon are?

Why Ian? What's so wrong with them?

I have a significant issue with them "assuming " the identity and history of another club. Forget the moral argument rubbish, whether they like it or not AFC Wimbledon are just a few years old and are NOT the old Wimbledon FC. They are still playing, albeit under another name in another location which, I might add, is totally wrong.

That doesn't however give any other club the right to take on their identity and history. AFC Wimbledon did not win the FA Cup or play in the Premiership. I have a huge amount of respect for what they have achieved but they are no more Wimbledon Football Club than FC United of Manchester are Manchester United FC.

There's a slightly different argument to be had if one club goes out of existence and immediately reforms (a la Telford into AFC Telford) but as MK Dons exist, whether people agree with it or not, AFC Wimbledon should be considered a very well run and very successful start up team but nothing more. Many of their fans however don't view it that way.

Whilst we are having a go at AFC - I also think it is entirely wrong that they are attempting to buy Kingsmeadow. Whilst Kingstonian were in deep trouble anyway and there was always a risk of the ground being sold or developed I don't think it is acceptable for a "new" team with considerable financial clout to just disregard another team's history and swallow them up.

i heard that they already owned the kingsmeadow ground, and that kingstonian were now the ones groundsharing with afc instead of the other way around.

i have respect for what afc have achieved too but i agree with all of ians points.

Having investigated this a little further it seems it is not just a few supporters that are under this misconception, it's the entire club. The official AFC Wimbledon website lists details of a sporting dinner in February with Dave Bassett. Taken directly from their site it is described as follows....

"On Friday 24th February 2006, former Dons manager Dave "Harry" Bassett will be joining us for dinner at Kingsmeadow. For those of you with short memories, Dave graced Plough Lane as a player from 1974 – 1979 during which time the Dons won the Southern League 3 times in succession and got elected to the Football League. Along the way he was prominent in many of our giant killing feats. He then took the reigns as manager from 1981 – 1987, arguably our most successful period as a club when successive promotions saw us climb from the Fourth Division to what is now the Premiership, and finish 6th in the top Division."

"Our" giant killing feats. "Our" most successful period. They even have PC downloads on the site of Alan Cork with the FA Cup. I have every sympathy with how the whole MK Dons thing came about but all that is just bloody wrong and that is why, whilst I admire what they've achieved, I have little respect for them as a club.

Kingstonian are now the tennents, but the contract states that they can have that status for life.

So I have been told by an AFC board member.

Hmm... wonder what would happen though if AFC Wimbledon one day outgrow Kingsmeadow, after having bought it, and had the option of moving to a bigger ground - where would that leave Kingstonian? Surely AFC wouldn't want to, or need to, own both grounds...

Nice debate lads and totally agree with you. As someone in the early 80's who used to go to Plough Lane when QPR were away they do not have the right to assume the idenity of THe Dons. They are a totally new club that is not associated in anyway with the old Wimbledon.
