Bookings Update

Recommended Posts

Dave , with reference to bookings at what number do bans start ?

I expect that's our next obstacle .

Ah well , it's all gone well for a few years ,hopefully a minor blip .

I'm clearing out our cellar at the moment ( I live in an old pub ) and amongst old Fleet progs I not only found nos 1-6 of 'No Idea' but also three issues of Alan Fothergill's 'Halfway Chat' . Now that was when we were in the doldrums c1987 .

Hooray for the long forgotten Mr Hockley .

Do you know what the score is in respect of fines ? Used to be 5 or 6 bookings in a game and you pick up a fine - something we can ill afford. I understand we have already had one £1000 fine - any more looming as this must surely impact on Andy's ability to find and pay new players, especially without the £20k from an FA Cup victory !!

Just for comparison, this is the same first paragraph from the Premier League:

(a) Any Club who has 6 or more individual Players cautioned or Dismissed from the Field of Play in the same match will be automatically fined the sum of £25,000 for the first occasion during the Season. For a second / third / fourth etc. occasion in the same Season, the fine on the Club will be £50,000 / £75,000 / £100,000 etc.

Ouch!

At least the money is going to a good cause.

Could we apply to become an "agreed Football Charity" !!!.

Trouble is that this is self perpetuating - if the refs look at these tables, they probably actually turn up expecting a rough game, and the need to book players.

There has to be a slight suspicion that refs will book players for offences that, with a side with a better disciplinary record, would only get a talking to (although I'm sure the match officials would strongly deny this).

So you're saying that all referees turn up with a pre conceived idea of how the game is going to be played.

The only people who set the tone of the game are the players themselves, if they try and kick sh*t out of each other then plenty of cautions will follow. However if the players decide they want to play fotball then less cautions will ensue.

At our current level I think you'll be very lucky to get through a game without 4 cautions overall, but then that's just a personal opinion.

Thats probably not the case, but you do just wonder sometimes - after all, its even been mentioned in the Premiership this year about a players reputation going before him - Alan Smith being a prime example.

Its probably more likely that refs generally should be reviewing how poor a challenge needs to be before it is bookable. Some of the bookings we have seen this year have been for very minor contact, such as those last week for Strouts & Kwashi.

There are also inconsistencies between refs - Booth was booked at arnet for his handball, which whilst deliberate was more a fun thing than anything else, whilst players handling the ball in their own box, such as the Margate player last week, dont get carded.(Fair enough if it was deemed accidental, but then if it was, why was the penalty given?)

Football is, after all, a physical game surely there needs to be some common sense applied?
