You may be right for the first few records but their later work was excellent. They improved with time whereas The Stones got worse with time. .....

The scouse duo should have stuck to writing.
I still believe they sound awful, like a bad pub band, but wrote some wonderful lyrics.
Ringo Starr?... possibly the worst drummer in the world ever.
McCartney then went on to form wings, enough said I think, and what was Linda doing in that band?
The Stones although should now retire gracefully, were much more exciting, vibrant, original, and the 1982 "Start me up" album was a quality album from a band that really had seen better days.

Ok it is easy to take a poke at the weakest member of a super group however it was the composition of the Beatles that made it unique - I note that you have forgotten to mention cousin George's influence which came to the fore in the later music.

As for "The Stones" Clearly they are a manufactured media led group who will be forgotten as a footnote in music history in 100 years time but Radio 3 will be playing Sergent Pepper in 2105.

You (and I) are comparing a rich silver spoon fed group who forgot their mentor (Alexis Korner) (Did you ever see Alexis at the Hop Poles?) in order to become even richer and famous with a working class underprivileged group which took the new fashion (Rock and Roll) and fashioned it and developed it into their own music sound and, until the split, managed to utilise all artistic influences on their music. John and George obviously far better than Paul who became so much an establishment figure as he chased the loot.

Nobody has copied "The Stones" but plenty have tried to emulate the Beatles. And no I was not part of Beatlemania but have come to respect them over time. "She loves you" etc still leaves me cold.

Me too Steph.....& my teeth on edge, "She loves You", "Hey Jude" etc etc all had that awful scouse twang & spine numbing shrill, again great lyrics but awful presentation.

"Strawberry Fields" & "Penny Lane" are Masterpieces,
However, "Honkey Tonk Woman" & "Brown Sugar" etc have that kick that makes them still not sound dated 40 years on.

If you want a song with some kick that will send shivers down your spine then listen to Neverland, the last song on Marillion's superb recent album, Marbles!

Listen to "Street Fighting Man" by "The Stones" from 1971 and "Lyla" by "Oasis" from 2005. Then try saying that nobody has copied "The Stones".

I think "The Stones" have been an excellent band down the years, their record speaks for itself; 43 top 40 hits in the last 43 years including 8 number 1s.

How many number ones has Cliff Richard had?

Pop success is not a measure of quality. Elvis Costello has not had many number ones. Richard Thompson has only been in the charts, probably once,(Si tu dois partir) but his forthcoming tour is already sold out at the Barbican.

Cliffy has somehow managed 14 number 1s.

Elvis Costello has never had a number 1. How "Oliver's Army" didn't top the charts i'll never know.

Sorry Steph, have never heard of Richard Thompson.

Regarding 'Street fighting man' and Lyla.Apart from the guitar strum at the start, i can't really see the similarity.

Now, 60's/70's music in general. Look no further than these three albums for absolute brilliance:

1. Pet Sounds -The Beach Boys

2. Who's Next - The who

3. Live at Leeds - The who

Ps.The beatles and The stones were both great.'Sympathy for the devil' was the Stones finest hour.

Unbelievable. Get yourself a copy of Richard and Linda Thompson's 'I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight' usually available for about 7 pounds (the pound key doesn't work on this damn keyboard). It's brilliant. Unless of course you don't like folk that is.

As for all the other artists mentioned I'm more a Love man myself.

Oh no not The Who. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I take it you were a bit of a mod in your younger days LS. Magic Bus for goodness sake. What's all that about?
