Arlesey 2 : 4 Enfield Town

Duke of York

If we could put together the first half against EFC and today's second half performance, then we would be unstoppable!

Two cracking saves from the Arsley 'keeper kept the score at 0-0 until the last minute of the first half when Arsley scored at the far post.

Steve Baldwin had a tremendous game in midfield, as usual, but we didn't seem to get into the game until after half time.

What was said in the changing room at half time certainly did the trick. Smithy came on and ran the defence ragged. He was a pain in their defence and scored two cracking goals, one from almost 3 yards out!

Rudi scored from the spot but the best goal came from Steve V who ran at three defenders, took them all on, and scored from just inside the box.

Arsley were a very physical and had a player sent off after he complained too much to the ref after they had a goal disallowed. Two of their bence also had their marching orders.

Interesting to see that some of the Arsley players appeared to have had too much drink over the holiday period as they kept falling over!

What has ETFC done that Chelsea couldn't?

Go through a whole calendar year without losing a single away league game. What a performance! Surely this should be documented in the national papers.

Well if you missed this you missed an absolute stonker. Lee Smith was my man of the match with the ref’s whistle only denying him a well deserved hat-trick.

From the off both teams attacked and Town found themselves tracking back well through the Gantster, and David Allen. Early shots were saved by the Arlesey keeper who was saving well. A half chance to Trevor Paul was gathered by the keeper. David Allen headed over. Finally the breakthrough we had hoped for Niall Ritchie broke through and scored – but the lino adjudged Bryan Hammatt was off-side even though not interfering with play. Damn. From a free-kick a Trevor Paul shot was palmed over by the keeper. Graeme Hall Off and Steve Magona on against his former club. A shot from Keiron Woodward was saved. At the other end Chopper saved well. David Allen was booked for what seemed a clean tackle. Chopper called upon to save again. A David Allen shot was saved with ease. The best shot of the first half was from Steve Baldwin who on the edge of the 6yard box headed beautifully to force a great save from the keeper. Bryan Hammatt had a shot saved. A Trevor Paul solo effort was saved. Out of nowhere Aussie Foster scored a good goal for Arlesey 1 – 0. Keiron Woodward picked up the ball from deep passed to Trevor Paul who looked like he was going to nail top corner for it to just skim by. Shame. End of first half and town didn’t feel overawed at Arlesey but realised the fight was on.

Second half and Town could not sit back and didn’t Rudi on the attack, with a shot just wide. At the other end Chopper jumped to save and gathered one handed. Trevor Paul off and Lee Smith on. Almost Lee’s first touch of the ball was an attack a d the ball was in. 1 – 1. Town fans shouted at Jim Chandler “An inspired substitution Jim.” Lee Smith had found the key to this defence and opened it at will. At the other Arlesey score for the ref to see an infringement but give a corner? Chopper saves Town again. Bryan Hammatt booked for again what looked a good tackle. Lee Smith Scores again with a deflection for it to be disallowed for a handball and a penalty given. Rudi Hall stepped up and nailed it 1 – 2. At the other end Aussie Foster replied again 2 – 2. Damn. Lee Smith uncharacteristically shot wide. Chopper saves again crucially. Again Lee Smith on target 2 – 3. Arlesey shoots across the goal surely someone will put it in noop town breathe again. Finally a Maradonna hand of God goal for Arlesey but the ref saw it. 3- 3 the locals go wild including the keeper for the ref to disallow it. An Arlesey player is told to walk for dissent and an official from the dugout followed. Velandia on for Steve Baldwin. So to recap it was 2 – 3. Velandia on the edge of the box looked up **** me he’s going for it whack wow 2- 4 our Columbian International nailed it. What a goal to finish. So if you missed it you missed it you missed what felt more like a Cup Final.

Still not 100% convincing but what great spirit shown by Town in the last 20 minutes to rip the game away from Arlesey.

Many changes from the EFC game.In came Baldwin,Ritchie, Allen,Woodward...Smith and Valendia also made a bid difference when they came on.

We are still panicking a bit at the back, and not winning enough second ball in midfield. Also G. Hall and Gant always seem to be carrying an injury.

Hammett made some great breaks through again. One he was very unlucky with when his shot was superbly saved, another time he broke clear to set up a great chance,BUT he's got to be stronger with his back to goal.He can't just keep playing for a foul by falling over. He's got to win more headers ,hold the defender off more strongly and get his body or foot in front of defenders that try to nick the ball from him.Paul showed promise again but his final pass or shot were always wide of the mark.

But overall this was good perfornmance ,especially in the last 30 minutes and showed true championship winning determination. We really started to fire on all cylinders in the last third of the game.

Its always nice to turn over a team with a mouthy bench.I did like the way their bench encouraged and instructed from the side, but their constant swearing and mouthiness was to over the top.So was the way they ran onto the pitch and jumped about like demented children everytime they scored.Their coach Scott Houghton (ex-spurs)was the main culprit.Always nice to silence a team like that.Saying that, i was quite impressed by them and feel they will finish in the top 7 this season.

Great fourth goal by Velendia.Close dribbling in the box to beat three defenders then a cool finish into corner.Smithy must get more chances as well,he look sharp and dangerous when he came on and deserved his two goals. It should have been a hat-trick because he also scored a split second after we were awarded our penalty.Luckily we converted it,so it didn't matter too much.

Make your mind up, Softie! Shot or header? I thought it was a powerful header.

Stop splitting hairs. I don't have that many.

Lee Smithsd second goal was a powerful header provided by James Taylor. OOps

good performance by the front men, their keeper kept the score line down, but that is what he is therefore. All his saves in the first half he managed to stay within 12 inches of his line.

midfield battled against some big guys and did well to stay controlled

defence - is looking a little worrying, the 3rd goal was fortunately disallowed, but when Arlesey came forward we did not look comfortable at the back

A big well done to Lee Smith, that gives Jim the kind of selection problem he loves to have.

In the top half of the table only us and Stamford managed to win, so it was a good day alround.

Quality entertainment today, on the field & behind the goal where the banter was on top form, the best being Arky's inquisitive question hurled towards Darren Hay in the form of,

"How do you get your shirt on over that ego"

A great performance from the Town today with Niall Ritchie & Steve Baldwin standing out but MoM has to go to Lee Smith who was superb today from the moment he came on he ran & ran the Arlsley defence ragged.

Their keeper had a great game too.

A quick observation here, why when Geordie went off did Magona go into midfield instead of left back & push woody forward?

Well done Town & a happy new year to all.

Just one of the reasons that i cancelled my order a few months ago was the poor quality of most match reports.
