Last night.

Recommended Posts

A lot of debate has been aired regarding the late canellation of last night's game - from all viewpoints the club appears not to fare very well. It IS dissappointing to arrive at a game, having been told all day the game is deinately on, only to be told at the 11th hour that it is off.

Several lessons need to be learned, and implemented for future.

1. When a game has ANY doubt whatsover, and surely this was a candidate with freezing temparatures, heavy snow, thawing and heavy rain all in the space of about 8 hours, the club - who must have staff on duty during the day, have to contact a suitably qualified local ref to give an EARLY yes or no to give fans the chance to postpose long journey's.

2. Have a list of suitably qualified local refs available to be called upon to make that decision.

3 Appoint someone in the club to be on call and available both at the end of the phone AND on this forum (which is proving to be be the most visited) answer match queries.

I would be miffed from yesterday if I were a Crawley fan.

It is understandable when a game is called off because of a last minute deluge or sudden icing or fog, but common sense should have prevailed to cast some doubt regarding the pitch.

Clearly it looked perfect but was already waterlogged undersoil.

Let us learn, as we did from the debacle over the Scarborough match last season.

I'm sure Brian et al will respond, as always, with a positive spin, and as part of the great ticket givaway, will make some concessions for those away fans who arrived in good faith to find the cancellation.

We want to be seen to be professional, then we must act so, and stop making mistakes that seriously damage our reputation.

And you can tell me for a fact that no ref was called upon at say 16:00?

Crawley fans are miffed. Blue is the colour....

Good point, Harry. No-one's actually bothered to consider this possibility. It may be that indeed, as everyone says, the club just assumed the pitch was OK... but alternatively, perhaps a local ref was called and gave it the go-ahead at the time. None of us know otherwise until the club say something one way or the other.

I always back the club to the hilt, but what really wound me up last night was the attitude of the lady answering the phone.

She couldn't give a toss and couldn't understand why the fans were peaved. Is it too much to ask for one steward to stand outside the front of the ground or a sign saying "sorry the games off"? I don't think so.

The club can't do anything about the ref decision, but it can and should act in a correct way towards its own fans, and fans that had traveled from Crawley (bar one!).

I still cant understand how I can be told the pitch is fine and there are no problems at 5.30, then have the game cancelled at 6.10.

If we want to be taken seriously in this league we need to look beyond the players to the back office aswel.

Rant over!

You would think that they would make a statement and publish it on a website somewhere wouldn't you.

A good response from the club, through Roly. In general he seems to be agreeing with my posting, in that there are things to be learned.
Would a response been as forthcoming had there not been such a furore on this forum, though?
I should also point out that my posting appears to be made before the statement made by the club.

In mitigation, I did also add this proviso, which probably spared my blushes.
Even Alan Titchmarsh would struggle to ascertain the water table level beneath a pitch surface!!
