IN THE AFTERNOON MARCOS DOS SANTOS SCORED A GOAL AGAINST ALIANZA LIMA IN THE 3-1 TRIUMPH. IN THE EVENING HE WAS DEAD FROM A HEART ATTACK.

This was the sad news that broke in Peru late on Sunday night.

Yesterday's newspaper reports "The happiest day was also the saddest. All the people of Huancayo (home town of Deportivo [****!!****]a) who had celebrated with happiness after the 3-1 against Alianza (Peru's equivalent of Man. Utd) were surprised and saddened by the death of Brazilian striker Marcio dos Santos.

In the afternoon, Marcio had scored with a fierce header to net the second goal, which changed the destiny of the match and was celebrated noisily around the stadium.

In his goal celebration, Marcio ran towards the nearest TV camera, taking off his green shirt to reveal a t-shirt with a message that read 'Happy Day, Doña Enith' - Enith the mother-in-law of Marcio - receiving her best birthday present which could be seen all over the country.

After the game, Marcio went to the hotel Santa Felícita, situated in the Plaza Constitución in Huancayo, where he had lived for one month with his wife Amelia. He arrived there full of emotion but also with a pain in the chest.

Marcio's doctor was called urgently and found the player doubled up in pain from around the heart. He checked the player and applied an injection. The doctor left, but Marcio's pain did not go. At around 8 pm Marcio collapsed suffering a heart attack. He was pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital.

Only 28 years old, the Brazilian, in the afternoon with the no 13 on his back had given immense pleasure to the city, in the evening his life had been extinguished.

Without a doubt and with absolute sincerity, this loss - in a week of deaths in football (two Colombian players had earlier died following a lightening strike on a training field) is extremely distressing for our local football".
