Ok, ok, I admit it. I've followed the Saints for about six or seven years now, but can't remember when we last reached the first proper of the FA Cup. Any reminders would be appreciated (not too many insults for my obvious lack of Saints-related info)

The last time was the famous Bamber Bridge occasion in season 1999-2000. We'd already beaten Bedford Town 2-0 away, Nantwich Town 4-2 at home and Canvey Island 2-1 at home after a 3-3 draw at their place. 1,127 witnessed a torrid afternoon's football enlivened only by the mass brawl at the end. Before that we got to the second round in 1996-7 losing 9-2 at Bristol City after beating Wisbech Town 2-1 away in the first.

Walsall in 1969? Can't remember when we played Torquay but I think that was first round as was Cheltenham in 1993.

Bristol City. 1996/7. Ah yes. I remember it well.

 

We played 3 at the back. Someone ought to mention it to The Duo in case they are thinking about tactics 'early doors'. It worked a treat that day. We scored 2. Clark and someone else. It might have been Haworth. Held Joe Jordan's City to just 9.

1926 - 1st round - lost - Leyton - 0-1 - away

1927 - 1st round - lost - Chatham - 1-3 - away

1969 - 2nd round - lost - Walsall - 1-3 - away (after 1-1 at home)

1981 - 2nd round - lost - Torquay utd - 1-4 - away (after 1-1 at home)

1993 - 1st round - lost - Cheltenham Town - 1-2 - home

1997 - 2nd round - lost - Bristol City - 2-9 - away

2000 - 1st round - lost - Bamber Bridge - 0-2 - home

In 1996/97, had we beaten Bristol City, we'd have played Chesterfield in the third round.

 

That was, of course, the season Chesterfield went on to take Middlesbrough to a Semi-Final replay having led 2-0.

What about the Wealdstone game in the 1st Round. When was that?? I'm sure it was late 70's/early 80's.

Think the 1881/2 teams were previous St Albans teams, maybe one of our historians could oblige? Wasn't Wealdstone 4th Qual Round anyway? 1-2 in about 1979, I seem to remember.

Surely if you were such a big fan of the Saints and were truly a football analyst (highly unlikely, I know!), you'd already know what you had to ask. Or am I just being a little cynical for this time of the day?
