From Fridays observer.

"Speaking to the Observer after the Rebels had battled into the first round proper for the 12th time in their history, club chairman Martyn Deaner indicated that he is ready to shelve his bid for a new stadium.

The Rebels had launched a plan to switch their ground from Wexham Park to the land between to St Ethelbert’s School in Wexham Road and the Cherry Orchard allotments in Stoke Road. It is the best of a number of sites for a stadium that Slough Borough Council could offer as a possible new home.

But Mr Deaner said: “Because there is a crematorium nearby that has Saturday burials, it is non-negotiable.”

Mr Deaner had proposed the building of a sports stadium together with hotel which, he claimed, would be more attractive than the centre at nearby Bisham Abbey which provides training facilities for top international teams.

There has been much arguement surrounding the plan, much of it stemming from allotment holders near to where the new ground would be situated.

The council has conducted a poll to ascertain the level of support for the venture and is set to submit its findings to the cabinet next week.

But Mr Deaner had cancelled his own planned fact-finding survey scheduled to coincide with the council’s poll at the end of August.

On Saturday, just before leaving for a business trip to Taiwan, he said: “It could leave just one option – to redevelop Wexham Park.”

Mr Deaner added that this meant buying the lease from current owner Alan Thorne, who lives in Spain.

Mr Thorne managed to obtain planning permission from South Bucks District Council to develop the site, but stunned everyone when he withdrew his support for the club, then in the Conference, after a long public wrangle with Slough Council over funding. "
