Canvey Cup Team Performances

Phil Old Boy

Recommended Posts

I don’t normally write this type of thing but after being woken early by the wind, outside, this morning, was reflecting on yesterday’s individual performances.

1. Potter – Did what he had to, the best Canvey player today.

2. Kennedy – Played out of position, should have been more on the right where we know what he can do. Got frustrated in the first half and the game seemed to pass him by in the second.

3. Duffy – What happened to Duffers. One of our best players last year but was tormented by the Slough No.7. What happened to those long galloping runs he makes and cut ins. It seems he was under instructions to stay back and try to protect the back three, but did not look happy.

4. Gregory – Was slow and given a hard time by their No. 9. Lack of games has not helped but could lose a stone and is he good enough.

5. Davidson – Tried his best in a different position but is just not good enough. Painfully slow again and again has not been given many run outs. Wonder why Jeff signed him back if he was not going to feature in many games so far this season.

6. Johnson - Good long throw-ins but didn’t sparkle. Probably the best out of the back three though.

7. Protheroe – Awful.

8. Minton - Looked good when running at them in their half but only did this on one or two occasions. Other times held the ball too long, like Miller used to, with potential moves breaking down.

9. Gregory – Tried but again was looked after by some good defensive work.

10. Boylan – Had a couple of chances but did not have much go his way.

11. Forbes – Where was he playing and what job was he given to do. He played in JK’s “old” position and appeared, like Duffy, to be trying to protect the slow back three. Looked best, like Minton, when he was in their half and would of opened them up more if he played up their end of the pitch. Remember his goal against us at Southend. Was wasted where he played. In the second half, he appeared to slow up quite a lot.

Sub

Brayley – Provided short term relief when he came and scored a superb goal but was then told to stay back after he scored.

Well Phil you beat me to it, but I have to agree.

When Forbes did come forward he was given plenty of space on the left but the rest of the team didn't want to know!

I thought Duffy was extremely poor, is he coming down with that bug too?

Why did Chris Perkins not play today? He spent half the game in the burger queue with Spencer Knight!

Potter was definately our best player, pulled of some good saves in both halves and if it wasn't for him the Slough goals could've doubled.

Crow had plenty of time to stop and clear the ball but putting it in his own net was not the correct choice, maybe he couldn't see it properly with David Gregory blocking his view.

JK's getting a little frustrated nowadays, I don't recall him ever being sent off for us before. He's the little scavenger man in the middle at the minute, but the ball seemed to miss him in the first-half and he was playing too defensively in the second - then he got his second booking of the game an took an early shower!

I'm surprised at your comment on Lee Protheroe though. I sponsored him so I going to stick up for him a bit. I thought he was Ok in the first half and I would rather of seen someone else substituted other than him (mentioning no names of course Duffers!)

That no. 7 Bubb is a class player and should be playing for a much better team than Slough Town. The 4 and the 2 had Gregors and Boylan in their pockets all game. Someone at Slough definately pulled off one good scouting report for that game!!

Interesting to read the view from the other end of the pitch.

Dont think the defender had any time to think about stopping and controlling the ball, there was a slough player behind him just waiting for the chance to score. He had no choice but to play it, and unfortunately (from your point of view) put it in the worst possible spot.

Thought your goalie was very good, apart fom the handball (lucky not to get booked or sent of by a picky ref). Interesting plact to take the free kick from. I would have though it had to be adjacent to the line not two feet back.

Bubb has been getting better and better for us, still goes on too many mazy runs only to loose the ball by trying to beat one player too many, but delivered a blinder on Tuesday - hence his habit of shooting from outside the box. Was impressed with your No 8 who tackled bak having given him two yards. Now why didnt we see that pace going forward.

Amazes at your comments on our defence - we think its suspect with Daly (our captain) out injured. Most of us though we would play our new loan signing (Nick i cant spell his name) rather than a right back out of position. We have an injury crisis in defence.

Over all I was suprised how poorly your team attacked, looked like thy came with the attitude that all they had to do was turn up, and the first goal confirmed it (Scouting ? we were well exposed by your long throw three on one in the middle of the park) . Sorry Slough are not the pushovers thay have been for the last two years - much more of a team. Have to say that was far from our best performance this season.

Won't make any judgements on you after just seeing one game - thats the magic of the cup!!

I thought from your outfield players Minton was head and shoulders above everyone else with Forbes not far behind.

Surprised to see you rating our number four so highly. Doesn't appear to know how to challenge an aerial ball properly and I though Gregory gave him and our number two a torrid time when the ball was in the air.

Must admit, I didn't expect us to get anything from the game as our record against you was poor and given your recent seasons in the cup as well, I thought our run was over. But the cup brings out the best in the underdog as someone else said. I hope we can emulate your successes now.

On a final note, Merv, great report mate. Last time I read a report of yours it was so one sided, but this one is a significant improvement and a good read. Keep up the good work.

Again, all the best for the rest of the season. I'm sure you'll recover from this and challenge for that elusive top spot.

Phil Old Boy I am lost in admiration for anyone who can create that much wind early in the morning
