Sittingbourne 2 - 4 Enfield Town

Duke of York

Recommended Posts

For those who like me, couldn't make it today, I can confirm Town won 2 - 4 with goals from Hammett, Rudi Hall, Baldwin and Paul.

I gather it was an ill tempered match with two of the Sittingbourne lads getting sent off in the 2nd half.

Well done to Town. Roll on Saturday for another 3 points against B&EH United.

Gate 332

Well we arrived just after a downpour and it was doubtful whether the game would go on but with some white line repair and some mopping up it was game on.

The first shot of the game came from the great Baldrick skying one over the bar. Passing was a new art as the ground water was causing all sorts of problems. David Allen’s late tackle caused a Free Kick in a dangerous position but the shot on the soggy pitch was weak and easily gathered. Sittingbourne won corner after corner in attempt to get an early goal. Chopper continued to save well and didn’t particularly look troubled. Niall Ritchie was easy like Sunday morning winning a corner with great skill only for Prince Velandia to show he needs some corner taking practise. Steve Baldwin tracked back well to tackle safely. Rudi Hall and Russell Penn linked up well for a shot to be saved. Then in the 19th minute David Allen capped a mare of a first 20 minutes with a flying header that beat Hall. Lovely goal David but the WRONG net. Town fans were lost for words the linesman raised his flag but after discussions with the ref the goal stood. 1 – 0. Eight minutes later the sleeping giant responded Bryan Hammatt scored a trademark goal sprinting through the middle one on one with the keeper William and slotting it home past him. Phew got out of jail free with a classy slot home goal. 1 – 1 Bryan Hammatt moving back up the pitch was fouled in the box with a third of his body falling forwards out of the box. Ref gave free kick? Sorry did I miss something there ref it had to be a penalty if you are standing in the box. The subsequent free kick hit the bar/post corner.

On 34 minutes Rudi Hall copied Bryan Hammatt’s example and nailed a copycat goal slotting home well. 1 – 2. And as for Baldrick he looked up from about 20 yards out saw the keeper was daydreaming miles away from his line and shot the ball in the net. Town fans erupted (where was Junior?) we couldn’t be happier for the lad. 1- 3 at half time and town fans chanted 4 – 0 to the Enfield Town.

Chopper saved well at the start of the second half and Niall Ritchie made a run from deep making a lovely chance for Trevor Paul whose shot was saved. Another Niall Ritchie deflection of a shot was saved. Bryan Hammatt’s shot on ground was saved. It was starting to be one way traffic. Niall Ritchie ran from deep again doing a lovely one two before just losing control of the ball. On the 54th minute against the run of play Smissen beat Chopper well to make it 2 – 3. Tense times for Town. Town were now tackling back well and starting to fear the rack? Town conceded a free kick needlessly on the edge of the Town box Allen off and replaced by Campbell before he saw red. A Sittingbourne player then saw a straight red for a very dangerous tackle. Down to 10 men and that really ended any chance for Sittingbourne if one existed. Trevor Paul scored a lovely goal using all his poaching experience to score. 2 – 4. A second Sittingbourne must have said something to the ref oops he was on his way back to the dressing room.

Town were out-sung by Sittingbourne but the result was a fair one.

I liked it when late on we got a free kick wide on the left and the ref called one of their players to him and when the captain aked why, the ref said that he wasnt going to have players kick others off the ball. Now I thought that that would come under violent conduct, so why was it only a speaking to and nothing else?

Reading the Enfield forum it seems to me that, perhaps due to FA cup calls, we had essex senior league refs yesterday.

It was apparent to most people in the ground that the lino on the far side had his flag up for off side as soon as the cross that Dave headed in was made. As far as interfering with play is concerned the player who was offside was on Dave's blind side and he may have been aware of his presence so he did not wish to head forwards.

Still Chopper should have anticipated the back pass as if Dave hadn;t headed it there would have been a shot from the offside forward.

BTW Hammat had a good game yesterday, probably the best that I have seen him play this season, however he was offside when he received the pass that led to his goal.

All round yesterday was an exciting game full of action made more entertaining by the antics of the ref (Magona's booking!!!!!!!!!! Just what was all that about). It demonstrated that when teams come out to attack Town then the forwards can cut ribbons through their defence our midfield has to work harder at home in order to create the openings that Paul (the best striker Town have ever had) and Hammat can score the goals.

I say that Paul is the best striker as he can run a shot along the ground without panicking and with supreme accuracy.

Steady on Steph.Paul scored a good goal yesterday and probably had his best game in a Town shirt ,as did Hammett, but to call him towns best ever stiker at this stage of his career is laughable. He needs to play like he did yetserday in EVERY game and score 20+ a season before he can be acclaimed as our best ever (and stop missing free headers from inside the six yard box, he's done that six times since his recent arrival). He's had 2 good games out of 10 so far. If he can improve the ratio of good games and reduce the number of poor ones, he may well be the striker were looking for.

Here goes.

Steph. Bryan may have been offside when he received the ball as you say, but from where I was standing, he was onside when the ball was played.

The own goal!

Linesman flags for offside, no doubt because he saw a player in an offside position, interfering with play and seeking to gain an advantage. What more does the referee need to do but agree with the lino and award an indirect free kick to ETFC. The offside was flagged before Dave headed it in!

Steve Baldwin's goal was a cracker! Looks like we have found a new forward. Maybe two if you count Dave Allen.

Rudi's was great because of the build up play.

The referee appeared to want to be the centre of attention throughout and I was shocked to hear some of the Sittingbourne supporters having a go at him at the end! Thought that only happened at Brimmo!

Point to mention - If it ain't broke, then don't fix it! It would appear to be very difficult to change yesterday's line up for next Saturday.

Funniest thing that happened yesterday. One of the Sittingbourne players came out of the dressing room with a 4" x 4" drain cover stuck inbetween his studs on his boots. Laugh! I nearly fell down the drain myself.

Ps.. I always said the real test for our forwards is to score against top six opposition at home, rather than away at the bottom clubs.Hammett and Paul thrive on space.Something that we get a lot more of away ,especially at the bottom clubs. We need to find a way of making them effective at home, where they are normally shut down quicker and marked much more closely.

Regarding Bryan goal.I thought he was on-side when the ball was played. The fact that the twitchy lino didn't give it ,says a lot.

Never like having local officials reffing us, especially in deepest Kent. The linesman we had in the first half refused to flag for any fouls on us, no matter how blatent and he was directly in line when Hammett was chopped over a foot inside the box, but allowed the ref to award a foul outside, but he had a dramatic change of approach in the second half and flagged at least 5 times to award Sittingbournes free-kicks.I knew we were going to have trouble with him, when he called at Town supporter a 'Clown', halfway through the first half.

The ref was just incompetent and attention seeking ,rather than biased. The fact that he booked Allen for being headbutted, defies belief. How the sittingbourne No10 only revieved a yellow for running 10 yards to headbutt Allen ,god only knows. The ref also seemed very keen to book Town players everytime the ball went off or a free kick was awarded. If a Town player didn't immediatly run after the ball and throw it in staight away of take the free kick immediatly he threatened to book our players. He did that with Magona. The poor fella was booked for wasting time taking a throw-in, even though he only had the ball in his hands for no more than a second or two.

What with the very boggy pitch, vocal locals, and local officials,we did very well to rise above it and produce the goods.

Can't think why Towners have a reputation among other team's fans for whingeing.

Note to general public: this was written about a match that we won, with two opposition players being sent off.

Father Jack.I presume you were at the game yesterday.Which parts of my post do you disagree with? The refs performance doesn't suddenly become better just because we took three points or because he sent opposition players off.I felt it was a display worth highlighting.

The first player sent off was because of an horrendous late tackle on Magona. This happened towards the end of the game. The second player was sent off with a couple of minutes to go because of backchat towards the ref.

The officials perfomances played a major part in the overall game.As i was commenting on the game in general. It was justified to highlight their contribution. The fact that we won ,is 'neither here or there'.

PS... If we only criticize officials when we LOSE,it may just be construed as sour grapes.

Another two points.

1. The referee said to a Sittingbourne player, 'I can't have people just going around kicking people when the ball is nowhere in sight' He had a chat with the player and we had a free kick - no yellow/red card.

2. Heard late in the game in relation to Trevor Paul and his goal - 'where's he going?', 'where's he going?', 'where's he going?'. What a goal!!!

Funny old game, isn't it?
