Puts Canvey's 3-1 win in the shade.

Bring them on!!

Thought we played really well last nite , some good football played . If the surface weren't so slippery it could have been even better .

We did play very well, especially in 2nd half. But we also rode our luck- we should't have been awarded a penalty (Boot must be in the frame for an Oscar) and they deserved one. (the Linesman on this side was waving his flag like crazy but the ref either didn't see him or, more likely thought that he himself was better placed) From the stand it did seem a hand ball. But that's football!

I also thought we played very well indeed. I thought Bubb was man of the match, no doubt. Some very slick passing and some excellent crosses from the whole team. And I can't remember such a well taken header (Steve Hale) since our Conference days. Gilkes looked very lively and I just can't believe some of the runs Barras makes at his [elderly *g*] age.. the midfield did the simple things right (and got stuck in when necessary) and the defence - while shaky at times, were glad of Wivenhoe's abysmal shooting . And well done to Tony Boot.. that's 7 goals in 6 matches , much more than I expected when we signed him. I'm gladly eating humble pie. A special mention should go to Steve Hale, having been excluded for most of the season, it was nice to see him score, but more importantly get into dangerous positions - had Wivenhoe's defence not intercepted, he was in the prime position to score. Keep it up Steve, hope this improves your confidence . I heard someone questioning why Metcalfe was a sub again.. to be honest, we were not playing the best team in the world, and it's better to make sure certain players are available for the big match. I'm almost glad Sammy was suspended as it meant he didn't risk an injury - we know how opponents love to kick seven shades out of his superior speed and class.

I just hope we keep this in perspective. We were playing a mediocre team with ten men who had worked all day and then travelled from Essex. Saturday will be different but if we play the football we can play, then the Canvey match will be a real stonker. I just hope the tie is settled at the weekend, because Canvey away on a Tuesday night is not exactly inviting. But hey ho.

(I also hope that Andrew Deaner is not being primed up for the FA Cup match.. surely we should have Winston/Boot/Hale pushing for those forward places?)
