From the Soham web site

This is the report on the Soham web site - makes you wonder what would have happened had Danny Heale's bicycle kick gone in. Urchins had the chances, and did not take them - the Soham report says much the same.

Match Report

This was Soham’s first game in the Vase this season, after receiving a bye to the second round. We were up against Essex Senior League leaders AFC Hornchurch.

It was the hosts than began the game the better of the two sides, attacking Soham’s goal straight from the kick off. After only three minutes, they were the first to have a real attempt on goal, firing wide from the edge of the box. As the half went on, neither side really wanted to test each others keeper, with plenty of balls into each box, but coming to nothing. Just after half an hour, Hornchurch had another decent opportunity to open the scoring. After a mistake in the Soham midfield, the ball was floated into the Soham box, with their striker putting over the bar, with a dramatic overhead kick.

Soham started to come back into the game, and on 35 minutes could have scored. Rob Allis delivered a long ball into the Urchins box, which was met by Robinson, who forced their keeper into a good save at his near post. In the last minute of the half, Soham wasted another chance, with Paul Hill somehow heading over from a Matt Robinson freekick.

Both teams came out at the start of the second half, with no changes. It was Soham that started this half the brighter, and within two minutes scored the opening goal of the game. STEVE BUGG picked up the ball just inside the Hornchurch half, before going on a solo run and releasing the ball under the keeper just inside the penalty area. A minute later, AFC nearly equalised. A ball from the left wing was headed over the bar.

On 63 minutes, Soham doubled their lead. Matt Robinson delivering in a left foot cross from the right, which STEVE BUGG headed home from 6 yards.

After this, AFC made a couple of changes looking to get back into the game, and on two different occasions nearly done so. The first when Greygoose had to make a save on his goal line, the second when they shot narrowly wide. In the 80th minute, Hornchurch scored their goal. The ball was headed into the Soham box, leaving DANNY HEALE the easy task of placing it underneath Greygoose, and into the net. From the restart, the Greens made sure of victory and restored their two-goal margin. Michael Simpson sent a long ball into the bottom corner of the pitch; which was picked up by MATT ROBINSON, who came inside two defenders, before powering a left foot past the keeper.
