a quick reflection...

Uncle Urchin

not good today was it and we seemed to be unsure about the 3-5-2 formation as we did at WA at the beginning of the season...okay...it worked alright against EM but this was a whole different ballgame......

we didn't play well and lost to a team with more discipline...more organisation...most importantly more pace and more desire on the day...

well done to Soham and good luck to them in the next round...

we must put this day behind us and move on...

As I mentioned after the game, I feel today was a sad reflection on the standard of the ESL. It seems that we can play well or indifferently in the league and still get a result. When we come up against a mid-table side from another league at the same level, we come up short (and I include Cogenhoe in this!). At the end of the day we can only beat what is put in front of us week in and week out, but we are going to struggle when we are faced with something different.

Having said that, the main prioriy must be to get out of the ESL ASAP, so bring on Brentwood!!

not so sure kel about the ESL being an inferior league... although results today indicate that you are right....

on a second reflection we had several good chances that missed by a whisker and none of us (even the defence themselves) could declare a good day at the 'back office'...and yet we had (before today) the best defensive record at level 5 in the whole country...

as dagger 04 wrote...IF...IF...IF...

but we must give credit to our visitors...we failed to deal with their pace in midfield and that probably sums up the difference 'tween the two teams...

our lads know they had a poor game as they set high standards themselves and they know that we are all disappointed...they'll bounce back as they did after the set backs at WA and against Worthing...we are still top of our league and will stay top regardless of who wins or loses next week...

anyway...the fckn white moon boots have gone in the bin...

come on you urchins...

ALL OF US....

It is no worst than other county league - the real difference is that over half the teams in the ESL do not provide any effective opposition, and the Urchins cannot raise their game on the few occasions when they need to, such as today.

The defence is not used to defending - as was proved today - they were wide open.

To sum up - Urchins did not take their chances. Soham did.

I am glad in a way, so that we can concentrate on the ESL.

But I must question weather we gave our all in the true urchin style of playing football. Our midfield lacks composure or creativity and our wingbacks/defenders result in punting the ball 50 yards.

Putting on some quick young wingers would have made all of the difference or are we relying on experienced journeymen who when they lose the ball trot back with their tail between their legs.

In my opinion the ESL will always suffer while Essex has a glut of non league clubs operating at a higher level. The competition for local players is ridiculously fierce compared to the Eastern or South Midlands regions. Any half decent player won't be turning out for the likes of Tilbury for long.

What I do not get is that we have seen the opposition which we are up against, and still play 3-5-2 which in all honesty, we are not at all comfortable with. WHY PLAY THAT FORMATION???. All Credit to Soham, they done well and seemed to know what we were about! We should of played on the deck, rather than HOOF IT!! What annoyed me most, is that certain players do not seem to be playing with the same passion anymore, we gave a bad account of ourselves today!! I like to end this with a high so..... we are top of the league so let's keep it like that.

Sorry we are not good enough opposition for you. I'll have a word with all the other teams in the ESL. See if we can't raise our game for the benefit of Hx.

I was annoyed yesterday morning that i was not able to attend the game but on reflection reading the posts i'm mighty glad i did not.I cannot comment much on the game against Soham but my view on recent games is that we appear to be short of pace up front and Billy Holland and Danny Heale are a yard shorter in pace than they were at the beggining of the season. Also the midfield is slow in supporting the play regardless of what system they play.It could be that the players are a bit tired or carrying knocks but to me they are a lot slower around at the moment.

One thing i would like to see tried is to play Charlie Bull up front with Billy Holland as i think that in certain games this season we could have benefitted with the injection of pace up front especially with playing the long ball game. However this would require someone with pace getting up to support and for that i would play Greg tiffin at right midfield. Its just my idea and i am sure not everyones viewpoint.

As far as I see it Hx have got them selves a ESL select 11. It would be silly to do it any other way. Why pay out for better more expensive players than you need. That's what knackerd you last time I suppose ?

You have to remember you are big fish in a little pond. And that's the way it has to be for a couple of seasons I should imagine. Softly softly catchy monkey.

Sorry Lighty me 'ol mucker but we are just poor little Urchins and are doing our best to win, like everybody else, the ESL.

On yesterday, just a few words, let's be honest we played 3 5 2 because it's the way we played last Tuesday and an old saying in football is that you don't change a winning team.

It was changed last Tuesday for a very justifiable reason, in that as far as I can see, lately, we have lacked a passing "libero" in the middle, we then play two against the Manor.

But, of course, Soham were a bit different and very strong in that department.

Maybe there is a case for others to be given a chance as well, that is up to the JAPS to decide, us supporters must give our utmost off the pitch and there is now a week in which, in two training sessions, to work on one or two things.

Let's see that support maintained at the Brentwood Centre next Saturday in what will be a difficult game as we all saw in the GB Trophy.

Meanwhile good luck to Soham in the next round.

well said max...we were not on top form yesterday but upon reflection think about how many chances we missed and also the two goal line clearances they had...

fair play to them as they fcked off with the goodies (and a decent well mannered bunch of players they were as well) so 'soham' if your logged in tell those boys well done on all counts..and good luck in the next...

rather lose a vase game though than lose 3 league points so come on lads....brentwood on saturday...lets get up there and get those 3 points and blast their ears with the red and white disco......

some fcker has to pay....

I agree with most of what has been said. I was surprised at the 3-5-2 formation, especially when you bear in mind that they clearly had quick attackers and in their number 11, a decent winger.

Facts are they took their chances and we didn't, we looked a little off the pace and not mentally aware enough to make changes when things weren't going well.

Just before half time I heard the most telling comment, their number 8 (captain) shouting, 'come on lads, believe, we can do this'. I think perhaps they came expecting a very hard time.

We got caught out, but it's a one off game and we have a league to win. Let us not take our eyes off the real prize and diminish the importance of really big games ahead against Romford, Barkingside and Brentwood..

Glory is found over an entire season, not one game.

i feel that the esl has 5-6 decent teams, from what i have seen the rest aren't really up to it,may be a little controversial but thats my view.

also the ridgeons probably have the same amount of teams that aren't up to it but it is a bigger league and has 10-12 half decent teams

did anyone see that leiston lost 8-1!!

they as a club are used to this competition,we haven't been in it for a while, but they were the better team,i said at half time if we went a goal down we would struggle to come back as they looked pretty efficient at the back. But our priority is getting promotion and for that we are on track, but next 3-4 games will be crucial
