News from the Boro'

FARNBOROUGH Town boss Frank Gray is gunning for league leaders St Albans City this Saturday as he looks to end a two-game losing run — while also closing the gap at the top of the table, writes Rebekah Wheller.

One-nil defeats at Welling and at home to Dorchester last week saw Boro drop to eighth in the table, seven points behind the high-flying St Albans, who, in contrast, are hunting their third successive win.

Gray said: “They’re a strong side at home and they score a lot of goals, but we score a lot of goals too. We always look dangerous going forward and we’re creating chances, if you don’t create that’s when you have to worry.

“I’m not worried about us losing the last couple of games, we played well in them and didn’t deserve to lose, I’m sure we’ll play worse than that and win games. It’s a chance for us to move up the table and it would be nice to peg back the top side.”

The bad news, however, is that Gray is still without long-term injury victim Adam Theo, while influential winger Ashley Sestanovich is also set to remain on the sidelines for a couple more weeks.

Ty Smith (groin) could though return to selection for the weekend if he comes through training unscathed.

“It is important that we get Adam back as soon as possible,” Gray added. “We have conceded a few goals without him but it’s hard to say that we wouldn’t have conceded them with Adam in the side. We’ll take a look at Ty in training and see if he’s ready to come back.”

Saturday is also goalkeeper Kevin Scriven’s last game before his three-game suspension starts after his sending off at Welling, but Gray already has a young Premiership Academy keeper lined up for a loan move to replace him.

For Saturday, the boss will be making the most of having Scriven on the pitch while he can, while also hoping his forwad quartet of Carl Gibbs, Paul Harkness, Warren McBean and Michael Charles can make a return to scoring ways after netting just one goal in the last three games.

The boss concluded: “Carl’s already scored a lot of goals for us, and if he’d have scored one early on, on Saturday we might have gone on to win it.

“All strikers have off days and I’m sure he’ll be back scoring soon.

“We’re confident about Saturday, they’ll make it difficult but we go into every game with confidence. We just have to limit their chances on goal and make sure we take ours when we get them."

- that last sentence doesn't sound like confidence to me, but what do I know.
