Boreham ... to death

This must have been the tactic last night. From the first five minutes when their keeper took their first goal kick, it was evident they were in no rush at all. Wardy was a hero last night, and Forbes showed the "sparkle" (great goal celebration with the specs !). Eight games now ...

a lot more teams seem to have adopted this delaying attitude this season.. the usual suspects braintree n purfleet have actually got a lot better, especially purfleet but it has definetly increased.. whilst i can understand it if your 1 up or drawing away from home and are under the cosh with 5 mins to go,. some teams start like this from kick off...very boring

not only do they start with delaying tactic!s but they crowd mid-field and the back line

It appears to me that when playing against teams that are motivated by fear we make life harder playing three at the back and further crowding mid-field ourselves

At least with four at the back we encourage the opposition to play and I believe we are the best in the league when teams attempt to out play us

when we are denied the space to play through a packed mid-field into an opposition back 5 up goes the long ball and we are down to the skill levels of the opposition

Again with four at the back when full-backs are encouraged to attack we are able to regain that movement on and off the ball that made us such a feared side

good point but im not sure at the moment we have the confidence at the back to play from deep and to try to string em out.. purfleet defended well and in our half a lot of the time.. this is pretty much standard ryman practice now, we will have to find a way through it.. when hopefully everyone gets onto the same wavelength will will see some of the good stuff we know we can produce from midfield...i also think that in these situations we dont get it forward fast enough (long balls dont count).. when was the last time we were constantly breaking at pace?

Point taken CANV but there are two methods of breaking early under control

1. a defender as you suggest brings the ball out into space at speed

2. a defender makes the early ball pass to mid-field IE the pass being "at pace" and accurate plus early

Unfortunatly we mostly use standard c/halves skilled at the headed clearance and well intentioned thirty yard pass

For me the high level skill of the early ball out to mid-field (followed by the supporting passer) mixed in with the longer accurate ball down the channels is the correct balance

BUT this developed style of play does call for consistancy of selection and system

The 3 at the back calls for at least one pacey very intelligent "player" who is a top passer of the correct ball and a mid-field prepared for 90 minutes to work closely with the back 3.

A manual titled "age concern" which has chapters from playing at a reasonable level, Coaching kids and 17/18 years of age tryers and observing two of my sons make professional youth football with one of them making 4 years full time pro

What all that taught me mostly was that the older and more experienced I became the less I was certain I know

So much is in the mind of the individual which is why these forums are so useful
