Finished four one and a bit of a shambles. McCleary and Woodruffe ended up in attack with West in behind them and no players holding in midfield.

 

Whilst it was a relatively strong side Gravesend fielded (by our standards), and after an encouraging start, the home side faded badly at the end.

Yep disappointing tonight. Looked OK going forward, but a shambles at the back with lots of defensive errors. If they did not miss a sitter first half, hit the post the second and have the goal ruled out for offisde it could have been very embarrasing.

 

Would be interested to know how many first teamers played. Recognise Omoynmi, who scored against us last season in the trophy, but did not recognise many others.

 

Only encouranging thing was really Alexis, who worrked a lot harder off the ball and tracking back - and played some fantastic balls at times to our forwards.

 

Apart from that pretty worrying!

Wish there had been more traffic on the M1 so I didn't have to watch as much of the game tonight as I did. Cold and crap.

Alexis was indeed a very bright spot on what was a poor performance from a strong team. With the exception of Ballard for Lovegrove, Wilkinson for Alexis or McCleary and Brooks for Seedel this was basically our strongest current available line-up and we looked poor especially at the back. McCleary did very little tonight while (and I know I've said this many times before) Avery had a total nightmare (although to be fair he wasn't the only one). Much work to be done (again) before Saturday, and worrying that Hodges and Woodruffe both appeared to pick up slight knocks.

Have you got the names of some players? I could confirm first teamers ect ect.

 

Did James Smith (Central defender) and Aaron Kerr (Goalkeeper) play and if so how did they do? What about Justin Skinner at left back or Scott Gooding at right back?

 

Was there a Ryan Maxwell playing on the right? He turned out for us in our first pre-season friendly down at Folkestone. 30 Seconds after kick off and he went off injured with a broken collar bone. He then wasn't seen playing football again until our first home Ressie game of the season and got some sort of leg injury but still even now don't know what it was. Then we heard he went on loan to Margate but then someone said they saw his name in a reserve team line up the other week. It now transpires he could be on a dual contract.

 

P.S Don't know why I'm telling you all this.

I'll try and find out, but it won't be until tomorrow, and I do have video clips of the first three goals (two pens, and a good strike for your second)

I think a Smith may have been playing (as your keeper kept shouting out Smudger, don't know whether it's the same one though) and there was a Maxwell listed on the original teamsheet but whether he was out there is another matter. The only other names I got were Omoyimni and 'Hodgy' as your bench kept shouting at him and it confused us because we have a 'Hodgy' as well. Hope some of that helps.

Have to agree, Mavis had a nightmare. Especially in the first half there were a few times when he had plenty of time on the ball, tried to do simple passes and kept giving the ball away.

 

Seemed a strange decision to play Lovegrove in central defence with Daly to his right and Mavis to his left. In the first half their keeper frequently punted the ball down the middle and Lovegrove seemed to be the man designated to head the ball away, being probably the smallest man on the pitch he didn't win many headers, if any.

 

Alexis had probably his best game so far.

 

McCleary played in midfield and was anonymous first half, improved slightly second half.

 

Best player by far was Woodruff.

 

The amount of space given to their midfield and wide players was simply embarrassing at times.

 

At present, our marking of players by the midfield and defence seems to be non-existant and at the moment most teams we play seem to be that much more mobile, quicker and better organised than us.

Lovegrove should have been sweeping in behind Daly and Avery. When their keeper has the ball, the three of them should be positioned so that Daly or Avery can attack the ball, and if they are beaten to it, Lovergrove picks up the loose pieces. This system worked extremely well at Hitchin so I'm told, and is something which they wanted to look at for the first team.

 

McCleary should be played wide left, not on the right hand side of a central trio - oddly enough which had no holding midfielders and probably why we got over run in the second half - so might explain why he couldn't get into the game. Sad to see West come on when we had a triallist substitute striker who didn't even get on the pitch at all.

 

Woodruffe did ok, but thought he lost his head in the first half and didn't recover from that, going to the point of starting arguments with his own team mates, which was very concerning to see and it appears that the team spirit of last season just isn't there.

 

Thought the whole level of professionalism from the club last night for events on the pitch was nothing short of shambolic. No warm up, no management guidance and a very poor use of available players, although that said, this was the case for most of last season.

 

Given the successes of the reserves last season, it's more than a touch disappointing to see what it has descended to this year, and even more galling to see Windsor topping the division!
