What if...?

[color:"red"] Where do you think we could be in the league if we hadn't let in so many late goals and had managed to hold onto our leads? Realistically, I think we could be in sixth or seventh based purely on the way we play, but luck hasn't really gone our way. Hopefully when we beat Tamworth and Cambridge we'll move into the top ten. I was thinking the same thing Saturday afternoon, i feel we could easily have another 6/7 points on our total but maybe i`m just being biased. I`m happy with the way it`s going and hope we can make the most of our next 2 games and get some more points on the table and hopefully a few more through the gate.

Yeah, I'm pleased with our position too, though some of our results have been a little disappointing (York, Crawley, Kidderminster, Morecombe), but I'm sure we'll improve on that.

As for the attendances, they're a joke. It's good that there's some positive noise now, but we desperatley need more fans through the gates. We won't be able to even think about challenging for promotion until we get at least 1k week in, week out. A new ground would help, but I don't even know if the nigh on 40 000 people on Canvey are that interested.

I don't think your guaranteed any result but feel we have needlessly lost 3 to 6 points this season.

As I say your not guaranteed anything look at York v Burton - sometimes your destined to get stung by a late winner or dodgey decision.

So suppose we could have realistically been in the top ten with only two of those results going our way. Hopefully a top 10 spot will be the cards after the next couple of games.

December through to early January looks extremely difficult and I can't realistically see us getting much change from some of these games. We may even slip slightly in the table - can't believe how tight the league is from bottom upto mid table.

Perhaps as fans we expect the club to come up with and organise all these idea's to get fans through the gate. One of the draw backs in being a part time club is having the resource to undertake all this. The fans and their idea's such as supporters team, drums, mascot etc. have made a big impact over the past few seasons so perhaps it's really down to "us" to implement some of these ideas?

I certainly don't mind approaching the managers of my kids football teams and offering them tickets etc. I've dragged people along to the games where ever possible and don't mind trying to put something up on my kids school message board. Is there anything else we can do? I would also imagine that the funds for a new ground will partly be coming from trust funds etc. and this is why we haven't heard a great deal whilst our cause is being considered.

Towards the end of last season I started bringing a mate with me to home games and he's been to a few this season. At first he was a bit apprehensive, but now it's just something he does. He still insists he 'doesn't support Canvey', but I beg to differ. How can you not support someone when you're paying to go in and watch them play?

Even if people come along now and then just to watch a game without taking a great deal of interest, but doing it to be entertained, then that's great. I don't mind as long as we can get a bit more of an atmosphere and a few less gaps on the stand. In an ideal world, I'd like to have to push past people to get to my spot, every week, not just when we play derby games.

I don't know, maybe I'm talking tosh, but it frustrates me constantly.

I drive down from Ipswich for every home game. It frustrates me that walking back to my car (which I park round a mates house),I get asked by at least 2 people "how'd we do?" or "what was the score". These people live a maximum of 5 minutes walk away from the ground, obviously have a slight interest in the teams progress, yet won't go to watch them.

I "lose" a whole Saturday when I go to a home game, as I can't come down to Canvey without visiting family (i've tried and it's not worth the abuse). Yet these people who would only loose 2 hours insist on asking me!

Ahhhh!

Rant over.

I suppose they other things to do on a Saturday afternoon. Problem is once you get hooked that's it. Watching football can be very expensive and time consuming.

I know various people who used to watch football on a regular basis (not just Canvey) who don't go now because either they've moved out of the area or have other things going on in their life.

I think we need to persuade the kids to turn up. Adults I feel are a lost cause.

we desperatley need to encourage the kids support

after the morecambe game two kids rode past our car and shouted "canvey are [****!!****] they were 3-1 up and blew it theyre [****!!****] " when i asked them where they were from you'll never guess where they said

yes CANVEY!! bloody disgraceful if you ask me.

Because they do not want to end up a fat little [****!!****].

Because by definition if you do not leave the house you do not support your team.

Jose has fantastic hearing but even he could not hear someone singing all the way from the Island.

Maybe we should start splitting people into types.

1 True supporter 100% brigade Yellow Army et al.

2 Homer & local awayers.

3 Homers

4 Homers in the cup

5 Homers in the sun

6 Trophy Finalists

7 Occasionals

8 Sky sports watchers & paper readers

9 Man utd supporters

10 The rest of the south of England.

You can only be a supporter if you go to games and spend your money.

My point exactly on an earlier post Ribbit - we expect youngsters to stand on an open windy terrace during winter - just like we used to do and continue to do.

But will our next generation want to do that - they have play stations and other distractions - they are spoilt for choice.

I look at youngsters playing Sunday football and it's extremely competitive and I've know kids to give it up because of the shouting. Also the fact that they are allowed to sit on their [****!!****] all day by parents instead. I don't think this is just a problem for football but will be for all sports in the future where crowd numbers are dwindling and the demands on proper facilities, TV coverage and excitement all play a big factor.

Perhaps my kids are an exception but I have taken them to watch football and they show no real "loyalty" or support. They are probably to young but if asked they will say they support West Ham - they have seen Canvey play more than West Ham but seem to follow whats fashionable at school - perhaps we need to make watching Canvey "fashionable" at school?

It's a shame because they only see success on the television. They failed to see success and probably never attended a game in our Ryman days where the football was incredible and our goal average was something to admire.

What short memories.............
