Under 16's

I paid a visit to the Met Police Ground at Chigwell today to have a look at Tony and Pat's under 16's against Basildon in the Chairman's Cup as mentioned in yesterday's progi.

Weather 10 deg C, Sunny to start but clouding over, calm

The young Urchins put on a super show, completely outplaying their visitors by winning 5 0.

It was clear from the kick off that our lads were intent on playing the ball around and an early corner resulted in a near post header, for our first, by Steve Carroll.

Constant pressure did not produce the second until later in the half, another header, this time by Michael McGinty.

The Urchins had been playing with the slight slope advantage for the opening 45 minutes and came out a bit cold for the start of the second when Basildon had their only real clear chance, skying over after a rebound.

Then came what was for me the goal of the match, scored by Jim Darke, who beat a defender with a bit of the 'ol Stanley Matthews dribble on the right and hit a screamer into the top left hand corner.

A number of offside decisions were then given against our forwards which were very close calls and it was quite clear that at some stage this visitors' tactic would come unstuck.

And indeed that was the case as Edward Freeman fastened onto a through pass, rounded the grounded keeper and nonchalantly tucked the ball in the corner of the net.

The proceedings were rounded off with another Edward Freeman goal, this time a flying header on the goalline from a right wing cross.

Altogether a very satisfying performance and if I was to single anyone out, the first half "linkman" play of Joe Staunton and the all round efforts of Steve Green at left back were those I would mention whilst not taking anything away from the rest of the team.

One thing that did impress me was the "roll on roll off" subs rule which applies in this league and is designed to promote development of these boys and to try and give all a decent run out.

THere was also the constant running of the Great Chigwell Railway, a miniature train that put One Railway to shame!

Well done Tony and Pat, well worth a visit for you Urchins' fans.
