Here Come the Fleet

Recommended Posts

I asked today why we don't play "Here Come the Fleet" when the team comes out, and I was told by the "gentleman" doing the tannoy that it was a backward step.

Now I don't know who died and made him God, but I seem to remember a poll at the beginning of the season that votes 66% for this song to be played.

So Brian have a word and get us our anthem back, it is the fans club after all!

(I was going to put in a poll, but it wouldn't work <img src="/forums/images/icons/frown.gif" alt="" /> As soon as I find the problem I'll get it running, in the meantime just add your comments to this thread)

Here comes the Fleet is a classic, and should be immediately reinstated.

It may be corny and it may be a bit dated - But it is ours..

As I have said previously, there is a great buzz around the 'ol ground at the moment, and we are most certainly on the up.

But lets not forget our traditions and heritage.

Lets get back to welcoming the team out to 'Cheer , Cheer '

Personally speaking i think 'Here Come the Fleet' is embarassing. Fair enough it might be 'amusing' and 'our song' but frankly its crap. Just because one section of the support wants it back and they all happen to post on here doesn't mean it should be played. I reckon about 15% of the supporters post on here, so why should what is decided on here go ahead, who died and made us God?

People wonder why the club lack volunteers coming forwards to help out, its quite simple, there are always a band of people who think they could do better standing in the background making catty and 'clever' comments.

I must admit it makes me proud when the boys run out to 'Here Come the Fleet' and the opposition fans are cracking up and most of ours are shaking their heads.

A new contemporary theme needs to be used. Generating ideas and stuff on here is fine but pretty much saying what we want we shall get is a little bit over the top. I don't personally like Gravesend Reporter being the sponsor. If I moan enough on here can it get changed?

Or how about the Chas and Dave anthem.....

Well, I'll be working hard to reach my target,

To earn a few bob for a day trip down to Margate.

I'm gonna blow the lot tomorrow on all my family,

We'll watch the Fleet win 5:0 by the Sea,

Classic...you can almost forgive them for supporting Spurs.

If you cant decide you can download an excerpt from the famous song here

Yesterday I was in Torquay and watched an entertaining 4-1 win for Hull. Two things were apparent. Stonebridge Rd is already a better ground than some league sides and the quality of football was poor. The skill and entertainment of Conference football is already on a par with Division 3.

i don't know who you are either

Anyway, I understand that Chicory Tip will be playing ' Here comes the Fleet' as an encore at their Albert Hall gigs next April. ( Can anyone confirm this ? )

Good tunes never die

Luckily missed the Strongbow fiasco before kick off (How can this happen !!!), so didn't realise how lucky i was to sup a pint of the apple juice at half time.

Here Come the Fleet makes me cringe. The lyrics are fine, they sum up the feelings and expectations of a Saturday afternoon, but that tune. Yuk!

The Mrs. Mills/Russ Conway/Bobby Crush style piano gives me nightmares. Producing an up to date version at this moment in time would be an unnecessary expense, so for the time being, why don't we shelf Here Come the Fleet and produce a newer version for our triumphant entrance into Div. 3.

Until then there are thousands of tunes we could use. Something stirring that gets the blood coursing through the veins. It doesn't have to be modern it could be classical. Something that would make the team come out fighting, metaphorically speaking. If it has lyrics print them in the programme every week so everyone can sing along. Or get some bright spark to come up with new lyrics that fit the bill, and print those in the programme. And most important, the louder the better.

Pardon me but, having been in Canada for the past 33 years, is the tune to Here Come the Fleet a familiar one? Please advise and what are the words, if any? I remember the stirring sound of the Post Horn Gallop the " gentleman" on the tannoy used to play when I went to the games (Circa Jimmy Logie and Peter Heathcote).

Like most folk, while the season has been a roller coaster so far, I believe when everyones healthy we'll be a force to be reckoned with. As an aside, my neighbour a few doors away over here comes from MARGATE -may have a quiet bet. Up the Fleet.

Is this Chinese Whispers? Seems to have lost the plot somewhere along the line. Can't stand cider so won't enter into the Strongbow argument - but I can sympathise with you:

"Guinness please?"

"Will Murphy's do?"

(*#*@*! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif" alt="" /> GNASHING OF TEETH)

Let's have a referendum on the Fleet song. If it gets the vote it's in.

If people like the lyrics but hate the tune, fair enough, just revamp it.

One thing I WOULD like to moan about is the w**k music played at half time. Just give us the goals around the grounds....if I wanted to listen to f*****g Queen I'd go ........no I wouldn't go anywhere actually, I think I'd settle for just killing myself!

Here Comes The Fleet is wonderfully tacky (words and tune) but thats not the point. The point is that it's ours and has been for many years. You don't just drop something like that without consulting the fans, and that means all the fans, not just the ones that post on here. Supreme exectutive power isn't just holding the microphone. If its going to be dropped, changed or replaced it should be done properly.

As for the great drinks debate, don't drink cider or the dark stuff but do sympathise. I would however comsume large amounts of real ale as mentioned in earlier threads but have to settle for Courage Best <img src="/forums/images/icons/mad.gif" alt="" />

Mine's a pint of Best has the nod over crap Smiths and Webster's and the like though surely?! It's hardly Black Sheep but then what is?

Alright.....I CAN drink Murphy's, just prefer the proper stuff y'know how it is? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif" alt="" />

Have to agree it's tacky and makes one cringe. It does not appeal to the younger supporters and they are the club's future. By all means have a poll but have to agree with Ronnie - it should not be just those few who post on here and have access to internet. How about holding some sort of competition even getting the Gravesend Reporter involved?
