We can't sign anyone until the window reopens whether they are free agents or not.

Presumably 'sign' is a point of pedantry here, i.e. free agents can play for us but can't sign contracts?

Not at all, either they can sign a contract or they can't, If we can't pin them down then there is nothing to stop them playing for us on a Saturday and then (for example) disappearing off to Notts County on the Monday.

Non-contract means exactly that: no contract just a gentlemen's agreement which is difficult when you introduce agents into the equation.

Point taken.

Does this 30-day rule that Harry alludes to actually exist in the case of players who have just had their contract terminated (unlike Adam Tann, who was only still at Cambridge because they retained his registration)? If so, Hodgson wouldn't be available for the first team for a few days, since his contract at Crawley was paid up on October 27th. Or I could just be making it up.

I have never heard of any 30 day rule.

Actually, thinking about it, the '30 days' thing actually comes from when Nigel Clough said he couldn't register/loan any new players until 30 days after the transfer window had opened, or something like that. So, whatever the ins and outs of this rule that Clough referred to, it doesn't apply to Hodgson's situation.

The is a period of 30 days from the closure of the window during which we can't take any players on loan.

(If you can be bothered to look, there is something on this around the closure of the first window.)

My mistake the embargo period is 7 days not 30.
