November 4th - More MFC memories

John Kirby wasn't even thought of when Margate dumped Bornmuff out of the Cup in 1961!! Sorry JK. Pity we screwed up against Notts County in the next round. More of that at a later date. 1972 - Sutton United really fancied their chances against us but the strike force of Kevin Barry and Barry Brown were too strong. The og, I think, came from some great skill by KB at the Hartsdown Road endn near the new tea-bar!! A low cross from KB found Barry Brown and a defender - the defender put it in.

November 4th, 1978 was terrible. Having seen Margate beat Croydon then Folkestone in previous rounds (my mother never did figure out how she got a parking ticket in Folkestone on a Saturday when the car was meant to be in Hendon)the thought of getting through to the 1st Round again against Woking would be tough but possible. Little did I know about the alleged dressing room problems between the players, Manager Dennis Hunt and our star player Mel Blyth. Woking took complete advantage of the situation and their brilliant left-winger cum goal poacher Eggie James made mincemeat of the Margate defence. The ex-Hendon player scored 4 I think. Although Margate has more than made up for that defeat by 4 brilliant away wins at Kingfield in recent times, I think that home defeat was the worst post-war display, IMO.

I walked out at 6-1 and didn't return until 11 years later.
