NOVEMBER 3rd

More amazing MFC history.

The brilliant 4-2 win at Wycombe in 1956, then the close defeat at Millwall in front of over 14000 at Cold Blow Lane. Then in 1973 I witnessed a boring 0-0 against Leytonstone. ( who then merged with the old Ilford FC then merged again with Walthamstow Avenue to become Redbridge Forest, before coming Dagenham and Redbridge - confused? **) ....anyway back to the story. I went home to North London that day thinking we would easily beat them in the replay. I think we lost 3-0 0r 3-1 at Hartsdown. It took another 24 years before we reached the 1st round again.

In 1976 we beat AP Leamington. (It's good to see the new Leamington doing well in the Cup) 1979 saw Margate lose in the Cup to Harlow, who later beat Leicester City. One of the biggest all time Cup upsets. Finally, I was at FGR for BBC Kent. I went a little crazy, live on air, when Jay Saunders equalised with a stunning 30 yarder.

** now we have a new Ilford FC and a Leyton FC ( nothing to do with Leytonstone )

I should like to add an amusing anecdote to the above story. I took the Central Line home from Leytonstone. The next station down was Leyton where various tough looking Orient supporters got on the train. (I rapidly hid my blue and white scarf which I still have) The only non-football supporter in our part of the carriage was a lady with a small cardboard box designed for carrying animals. Inside was probably her Snoopy or Snowy furry thing. After a few moments of silence one of the Orient "fans" shouted to one of his cohorts across the carriage "well it ain't a fu**ing giraffe is it"

I cant remember back to yesterday JJ let alone back to the days you speak of.I do however remember one day when we went to Bournemouth on that famous day of the 9 goal Ted. I actually thought Bowyer(forget his first name), was the better player. He certainly had more skill.

A very wet day if I recall correctly & not a nice trip home either. If only Terry Dann (I think it was he) had scored early on the score might have been different. We might have lost only by 11 goals to one instead of 11-0. My memory isn't what it used to be. Of course it wasnt November the 3rd though.

I do admire your recollections JJ even though I have a laugh at your expense. Please dont take it personally..
