Fan arrested for swearing at Campbell

What a waste of everybody's time and money. If that had happened at a non league ground the Police wouldn't have wanted to know (as proved at Hemel Hempsted a few years back). Glad the Police in North London have so little crime they can waste resources on stuff like this.

Blimey, if you can be arrested for swearing at players I'd be locked up for what I said during the course of yesterday's game. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

It depends really on what was said to Sol. He's been back to the Lane enough times over the last few seasons and taken all the stick they could dish out. Whatever was said clearly went beyond what he would tolerate and so perhaps it was right for the law to intervene.

There was no arrest for swearing. I think you will find that the 'supporter' was detained for 'behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace'. For this offence to be commited, one does not even have to swear. With a little more self-control, he could have gone home for his tea, and avoided the whole mess he is now in.

Breach of the piece? What, for leaning over the tunnel and swearing at a player? I'm glad you feel that's worthy of the time and effort it must have taken to arrest the guy.

Far worse happens in every town centre several times a week and nothing is done. The only reason he was arrested was because it's high profile for the Police. Waste of time and money.

It was breach of the peace, not piece.

Great response anon. Really took on board the points there.

I am with Ian I really think the police have better things to be concentrating on.

Well, I bow to your greater knowledge. There was me thinking this gentleman was acting in an abusive manner, disturbing and frightening other spectators, exhibiting potentially dangerous and unpredictable anger, and risking incitement of other football-driven psychopaths in the ground. I guess the police should have waited for the situation to escalate before taking action. Sorry if I caused offence by suggesting that screaming angry invective and abuse in a public place toward another individual was anything other than acceptable.

But another anon (or is it you?) suggests he was in fact arrested for breach of the peace which does not sound quite like what you describe. All I could see from the television footage is a bloke leaning over a wall shouting at a player. Something similar happens at every ground at every game in the country. Best arrest them all. Nonsense.

It's ok, Martin, I think it's clear that anon has never actually been to a football match judging by his/her view that everyone sits there peacefully and never displays any signs of aggression or utters bad language. He/she certainly wasn't at Hemel or Wembley when opposition players assaulted Slough supporters and the police chose to ignore both situations despite formal complaints.

By the way, anon, its "committed", not "commited".

these things happen in football but i agree that if it was non league then nothing would be done.

*This bit of the message deleted on account of the fact it was talking complete an utter [****!!****] about a legal case involving a former Slough Town player.*

I think it is just typical of football, a supporter shouts abuse and is banned indefinately yet players (like Rooney) can abuse referees and nothing happens.Even when someone assualts a supporter (Cantona) or another player they do not get banned indefinately, it is just ridiculous and why the double standards in the way football supporters are treated will eventually make our game sterile and boring.
