Full back/ wing back positions

Have to disagree with you about him being not good in the air MM. The only other player who gets anywhere near him in that department is JK and we all know how tall he is. Still, differences of opinions are what we come on here for to debate.

This has been an excellent discussion. Well done Michael for starting it.

My 2p worth is that I am with Seasidesteve on this. Nobody at this level of football is able to make fast wide attacking runs, take on defences and still get back and dispossess opposing forwards. It is two completely different skills.

If you want to use the wings, you should play wide midfielders. Bayley/Braithwaite/Ryan, and perhaps Oates look like good candidates if they are willing to do it.

True we are not scoring enough goals. I think the wing back system is partly to blame, at least with the team we have at the moment. Time after time we see long balls competently dealt with by defences. Remy and Amoako are both good at staying onside, but it's always 2 against 4. The only time it has worked was against Cowes, whose defenders couldn't hold the line.

I have to admit I didn't hold the above opinion when Collins and Braithwaite were banging them in, but it is partly to do with who you have available. Somebody remind me who our wide men were at the time.

Last word: Sacha has scored with 2 fantastic free kicks in 5 starts, so he's definitely in on that alone.

Thats why we need speedsters like Brayley & Sessay doing those exact things. Both are adequate in that department having now had experiences at the back & on the wing.

Brayley hasn't played at the back for us and I don't think he is going to. He is listed as midfield or front man for all the clubs he has represented.

Funny, while I was searching I found this in a report on Leyton v Braintree 17-08-04:

Two early second half goals put paid to all Leyton's earlier hard work as on 46 minutes Gavin McGowan fired a shot low into the corner of the Leyton net and two minutes later Albert Brayley added a second with a simple tap in.

I'm sorry.I thought he was playing left midfield lately, venturing up front and coming back too.Sessay played full back & must surely must have made some runs up the wing.Did he not come back to his original position as full back. Both are experienced in doing both jobs though I feel both SHOULD be our out-& out front wingers as they give width and have the skills to take on players.

Chris makes a good point insodfar as managers/players/supprters at this level kid themselves about the wingback role.

No one at this level(and indeed below Div 0ne) is good enough to fulfil the role.

Keep it simple KISS.(-keep it simple stupid)

Just let Defenders defend ,but make sure they do it well by not overcomplicating things.

(thats why 4-4-2 works at this level)

Also agree re:Sacha.-if he can score from a free kick every other game, keep him in the team just for that.

Maybe it could be like American football-with 3 substitutions allowed, you could bring him on ,take him off, bring him on again ,for free kicks.

That would be novel and get some publicity if nothing else.

He should be on for the full ninety minutes in my eyes. He has done nothing wrong since being introduced. The fact that he hasnt scored from a free kick lately shouldnt be a reason for not playing him(my opinion only) as he has more than earned his wages with his constant running in that midfield. I have even seen him outjump taller guys in the air too.Why he is ommitted is just beyond me! Perhaps substitutions are made on the type of player coming off. Do some kick up a fuss when they are substituted. Maybe Sacha is one of those that says nothing.Easy to replace a timid player in order to get someone else on.He has earned the right to be on the park and should never have been either substituted or left out of the side. Until he shows me bad form for a couple of games in a row then I think he should be in the starting line-up. But though it may sound like it I am not the manager of this club.
