"they tend to be people who have been conned into opening a buissness in the old town with promises of cheap rates and a regeneration project to be completed by last year"

I still support it but am finding it harder to support it with the rising cost and of course after they decided they wouldnt re-do the test. Lets not forget it wasnt just this Council that are responsible for this. The last one started this whole thing off.

Arent the current problems though due to those constructing it rather than this Council?

They didnt want to give in on the traffic lights either at the clock tower, but they did. They must have realised they would get some stick initially but they also knew they would get the praise for actually having listened to the people. It worked then & it can work again.

This time it would be involving a bigger stake and though people at first will curse them for wasting that amount of money in the first place they will also realise that the praise they get for seeing sense and listening to all of us will be worth the slating for the original losses.

Be sure they will advertise that fact should they actually come to their senses, and in a way, that they will be seen as a caring & listening council. We know know different but let them have their praise if indeed they do do the right thing. We will have seen a lot of money saved, and provided that money is used in a more worthwhile way for the community then it will have been all worthwhile in the end, for EVERYBODY, & thats what its all about isnt it.

Just think of how much they will believe that a reverse step on this can win them another day in office, because as it is now their chances are slim, especially if they continue to bulldoze this venture through.

But it still took persuasion by the people though James. Had there been none I am sure they wouldnt have removed them off their own backs...They admit they were wrong to be put there in the first place but had the people of Thanet not spoken out would they have still felt the same and knocked them down. The answer to that is simple "NO" THEY WOULDNT HAVE!

If my information is correct the clock tower lights could not be removed untill the E.U grant had expired. This was a 10 yr period that ran out this yr,if the work had been started earlier the grant would have had to be repaid. As for the T.C.the previous council ask for grants from the arts council and the lottery fund to getthe project off the ground but with all gov and council projects they forget to multiply the original cost by 5. take the port cullis building, the scottish parliment, and the welsh assembly buildings, Still who cares it,s only public money.

10 years or no 10 years my point above is that they would NOT have pulled them down in a million years(traffic lights) had there not been an uproar about them. Now we must shout about the T.C.in the same way but LOUDER!

Ive not heard of the 3 main party candidates in Finchley. Not quite as small a majority as down here in Thanet South though, just 664. The guy who won no votes in Parliament most of the votes...pretty sad.

The problem for UKIP is that they are a single issue party. If they have other policies they certainly arent getting them out. Its all well and good talking about Europe being controlling but UKIP needs more policies. Otherwise they wont get a member into Parliament. IMO...

Ive done just that. The introduction and foreword for the manifesto are just about Brussels and the EU. The manifesto isnt very detailed and just has a dozen pragmatic ideas all thrown together per major issue. Its all very vague. Theres also no costings. The manifesto doesnt really look like something an ambitious party looking for electoral success would pull together IMO. Success has only come from European elections not from domestic ones. The leadership of UKIP is not recognised by the public...how many people know that Knapman and not Kilroy lead UKIP?

Thats what I think. There is some good stuff in there but there needs to be more added to it in time for the May local elections.

Looks like my thread is turning out to be a debate between our two political fans,JJ & James. Still its nice to have an off topic sometimes but lets remember this thread is about the Turner Contemporary. However enjoy your debate.

Once they start you can't stop them. Usualy, when i can be botherd to think about what our politicle friends have said you can usualy sum it up in a single line. Once listened to a Tory govenment minister, who spoke for the best part of an hour.he could have saved us all time if he had said "i have been to Rhodesia".Going back to the clocktower round about,The other night(think it was Thursday)There was an incident at a infamouse bar by them. In the past with the width of road you could still drive by the police and ambulances,On this occassion with the large pedestrian island being constructed in the centre of the carrage way,the sea front was closed for a couple of hours. The seafront even in its present state is or is persieved to be at the heart of Maaaaaargates economic life. The problem needs looking at know, before the job is completed. Come on Council get it right.
