A Dire Performance

This has got to be one of the worst performances I have seen by a Canvey side.

You could have wrote the game down in advance and watched the script unfold.

Clarke is not good enough, why does he even get a look in, let alone at left back? Chenners spent the whole game telling him where he should be and Sterling spent half the game out of position covering for him.

We had Johny Keeling out wide on his own with Boylan and Ibe 25/30 Yards away from goal with backs to goal and two players on their back. Lets guess, Minton gets it looks up plays it out wide to Keeling who must have BO because nobody is within 30 yards of him. Wrong!!! he tries eight or nine times to play it to Boylans feet, Boylan turns straight into the defender who hooves it up the pitch for two mini Linford Christi's to run onto it.

By the second half they realised Clarke is not up for it and gave Sterling a torrid time who was trying to play his and Clarkes position. Dominic cost us the penalty which was a soft one, mainly because he was knackered and covering for the invisible Clarke again. MOTM for me Sterling or maybe JK,it could have been Keeling as he ran his legs off and lost his voice screaming in vain for the ball.

Like Saturday it was a horrid game where we were dragged down to their level and they played to their strengths not ours. To much in the air and all down the middle, people know about Boylan now, we have got to try something a bit different with him, he will get kicked up in the air all the time as defenders get tight and stop him turning and at 35 yards out it is worth them risking the freekick.

Duffers taking a throw in JK steps up calls for it four yards from him, play it to feet and turn or return, wrong sling it at his chest.

We have real quality in Duffers and Keeling who scare the life out of defenders when they get chalk on their boots and attack at pace, we have got to start playing our game.

Minton, Noto, Duffers, Boylan, Ibe, McKinney not good enough tonight.

Its time for Potter.

I have had me moan see you Saturday.

I'm not going to comment on our performance, as I can't think of many good things to say. Only the players themselves will know if they put in 110%, those who know they didn't should have a long hard look at themselves.

As for Burnham, I would like to congratulate them on a well deserved win, and I hope they go on an put the Shots out and get a big team. You could see the passion for the FA Cup in all of their eyes, with every tackle, and at full time when they celebrated (quite rightly) like they won the bloody thing!

I just did not see that in our players today, and I firmly believe that this is why we lost and played so badly.

Let's get down there on Saturday and cheer the lads on, hopefully the Canvey backlash will be taken out on Morecambe.

Yeah definitely fair play to them. They deserve be in the 1st round.

Only Sterling and Keeling come out of that game with any credit. Everyone else just didn’t want it and went missing and they need a long hard look at themselves because last night was a [****!!****] disgrace. No passion or fight what so ever. I’m bitterly, bitterly disappointed

Congratulation to Burnham, Hope they beat the Shots and get a league team that they deserve.

Lets hope they put this performance behind them and put on a real performance Saturday against Morecambe.

Agree - well done to Burnham. They stepped up to be counted and put in a solid no frills performance. I wouldn't be suprised to see them push the Shots all the way.

After last nights performance you start to look at the players and question their desire and ability but upon reflection I question our tactics last night.

Burnham should have been despatched at the first attempt and deservedly got another bite of the cherry. Three days later we face the same team and drop Bunce bring on Keeling and put Clarke in at left back. After a long term injury Keeling played very well - he took them on and ran at them. Clarke looked out of place with Sterling covering central and Clarkes position. Mario was playing wider and looked to be playing out of position. Lee didn't look comfortable and wasn't getting any real service.

I can't understand why we went to Burnham with simlar tactics which hadn't worked on Saturday and even after Burnham went down to 10 men we couldn't make an impact. Again we replaced Ibe with Hallet for the last 30 minutes (didn't cause them problems on Saturday) and brought on Tait either for the last two minutes or as a new pair of legs for extra time. You could see Burhnham starting to tire in midfield and defence and if it had gone to extra time I think we would have got a result but last night I feel our tactics were more to blame than just the players.

Rant over - bring on Morecambe now we are concerntrating on the league

Thought you might be interested in the point of view of a Burnham supporter I know who went last night and e-mailed me this morning. He's been to the Lane a few times (although not since we got promoted) so he's familar with a few of our older players.

"It really was the magic of the FA Cup epitomised. Canvey were obviously techically superior but Burnham's tactics were to simply lump it up the field and let their two speedy forwards try to get on the end of it - that's how they eventually won the penalty although the Canvey defender (Stelling ?) will be disappointed - it was just like the pen that Phil Neville conceded against Romania in Euro 2000 - you just knew he was going to do it. Canvey didn't create too many chances though - I was disappointed with Boylon. At the final whistle the crowd (over 600) went wild - pitch invasion - players carried off shoulder high - great stuff for a team that normally struggles to get 100 spectators. Don't think Canvey can have too many complaints - they didn't make use of the extra man 2nd half and Burnham just grew in confidence when they realised they could still actually win it.

All in all a very memorable night - probably the best in Burnham's history as they've never reached the 1st round proper. I assume the Shots are a similar level to Canvey - if they've got a couple of donkeys at the back then Burnham could have a chance."

On the positive side, and I'll probably be coated off for saying this, at least it has re-focused this forum's debate on footballing issues rather than the colours of flags and the banging of drums. I'm not going to criticise the club, or anyone involved with it, as the progress over the last few years has been a great achievement, and I must admit that I have grown to quite like the atmosphere generated by the drumming. However, we do need to consider what our objective is - do we want league football, do we want to go full-time, do we want a new ground. Personally, I am ambivalent, I enjoy the "real" football of the non-league and as my by-line says, I go for the solitude so crwods for me aren't an issue beyond generating revenue. Nevertheless, I appreciate some people want to go all the way to the football League, and if it happens in a manner that the club can sustain then great.

However, what we must guard against is settling into a drift with no clear objectives and no idea of what we stand for, or possibly even worse a clear objective but with no thought-out planning of how it will be achieved. we don't want to end up like Telford or Hornchurch.

Canvey shocked me last night as everyone in my house thought they were going to win! But it isnt the end of the world that they lost although it would of been nice ,we still all got to carry on with the support! because if people stop suporting them now because of 1 bad loose then theyl get no where!

ROLL ON SATURDAY! hopefully wel make up 4 it on sat against Morecambe! [color:"blue"] [/color]

Good post Yellow Bungle.

Overheard someone last night saying they were standing near a couple of Aldershot fans when we scored. One was on the phone saying Canvey had scored and were dominatiing the game and he could see us ending the game with six. If only - Funny old game ain't it?

As for the club and destiny, I suppose as supporters we all have ideas of where we would love to see the club and what level of football we are happy achieving. Perhaps some people have already had there dreams fulfilled. Can we as Canvey fans make a big enough difference and determine where the club goes or is this in the hands of the Chairman and Jeff?

I must admit I am totally confused as to why people on Canvey and slightly further afield have no real desire to turn out for a good footballing side playing at a very respectable level. As you point out Yellow Bungle - perhaps this "who are we and where are we going" effects the number of supporters who take the club seriously. What do you think?

There are probably numerous other factors involved such as Southend doing well, promotion of the club, entrance costs etc.etc. These have all been discussed pre flag waving days and numerous questions and answers thrown up. Trouble is the people who use this forum are already converted - I just can't get in the head of part time and fickled fans. I'm sure the 100 or so regular Burnham fans are questioning where another 500 fans came from last night and will they be back for their next league fixture.......

Sorry didn't see it that way. The way I saw it was a load of chavvy kids who couldn't give a toss about the team, thinking it would be fun to run on the pitch and then heckle the Canvey fans.

Will they be there for the next league game? I doubt it.

The real fans applauded the team off knowing they had seen a great cup tie.

Don't think it's something akin to Burnham mind. I'm pretty sure if we played Southend in the cup at our place and beat them, that the local chav army would run on the pitch and look for a fight with the Southend supporters.
