Gate 295

Today was a day of dignitaries, Mayor of Enfield and Joan Ryan MP in attendance at a Kick Racism out of Football pre-match warm-up.

ETFC started well with a Niall Ritchie header over the bar. Paul Campbell was causing all sorts of problems running into the box and a great shot was blocked by Marshall. A Russell Penn Header was cleared off the line by a defender. Bryan Hammatt shot wide. Some beautiful build-up play with a lovely one two between Steve Velandia and Niall Ritchie. Adam Gant tracked back well to head the ball into Choppers arms beautifully. Keiron Woodward made a lovely run down the left and the cross was just too high for Bryan Hammatt. Graeme Hall had a header just wide. The best chance of the half fell for Trevor Paul who missed heading home from a super cross by Niall Ritchie. An awesome volley by Russell Penn was cleared off the line. He then had a flying header go wide. Chopper saved a volley easily but then in the 45th minute Chopper was stranded after Dominic Hallows curled one at knee height into the net. Chopper was on this occasion stranded. So at the end of a good half for Town we were losing 1 – 0 against the run of what was otherwise a great first half (Best this season).

In the second half Kojo came on for Niall. A corner from Steve was headed down by Trevor Paul but the deflection by the defender was enough to take the pace out of the ball. Lee Smith on for Steve Velandia. Keiron Woodward tracked back well to prevent another attack. Russell Penn sent a long shot dipping just over the bar. Damn! Paul Campbell made a lovely run, passed to Trevor Paul who passed to Kojo who skied it. David Allen was coming forward and looking menacing winning a corner. Kojo scissor kicked the ball across the goal and a David Allen volley was blocked.

Corby were poor but they took their one chance. Town looked good until the final third and then lost their way. Russell Penn was awesome (and has been all season).

A good report of the game.

First half Town were playing their best football for some time, without finding the end product of a goal, BUT in the second half they were woefull. Talk about a game of 2 halves.

I have said it before on this forum - Town have two main problems in my view :-

1. We are a team of short/small lightweight players ( with the exception of Paul Campbell, Geordie and Russ Penn ) who are knocked off the ball very easily.

2. We are a tem without a goal scoring front player and neither Brian or our new man Trevor seem to be the answer. Town have now gone 3 league games without a goal.

For some strange reason Jim seems to think that the tactics will work, at least I assume he does, because we play the same way each week. Long high balls to our small players against tall / heavy defenders. It just does not work. At times we play with one front man and even today Trevor Paul played very deep.

In the first half Corby were there for the taking.

I have been disapointed by the poor quality of the teams in this league so far. We have not seen a "good footballing side", BUT, we have seen teams play with big defenders who take no prisoners.

Tactics and selection need to change if we are to stay in the top half of the league.

Whats your opinion ? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/boxing.gif" alt="" />

The workhorses are doing more than their fair share the stars aren't cutting the mustard. Time to find some stars who can work at this level.

I got the impression Trev was following team orders and only coming in on goal on occassions. Still missed two sitters though.

We have played Boreham Wood and Corby and both are VERY beatable. The league is there for the taking with a few minor changes to our team.

Oh dear oh dear. The long ball game, in my opinion, is a futile non-tactic - doubly so if you only have small players! If this is the case I must admit that if I still lived in Enfield I would not bother to watch a team consistently playing route one stuff.

The best tactic against big defenders is NOT to try to compete with them in the air, but to use skillful, fast, even small players to turn and outpace them. In short, play football!

I am at a loss to understand also!!! I am losing respect for the club; not because of the results; but the team selection leaves me with suspicion. I am not going Tuesday; my first miss of the season; I am a little worried of the team selection.

Billy - Steve Baldwin is in our squad just can't seem to make it onto the pitch. He walked away last year with the majority of the players awards and yet fails to get in the starting line. It is a mystery to us fans.

I think it's way too early tocriticize Trevor Paul. Any player will take time to adapt to a new side. However, Hammett has had a more than fair chance and in my book should not be in the starting line-up. What has gone on thus far this season does not make him a bad player but when someone loses form they have to be dropped. Brunob made a valid point after Saturday's game that to try Brian as a sub may just shake things up a bit and make a difference. I thought it was a shame, however, that Brian decided to have a pop at one of our fans after the game. I know that he must be frustrated, particularly that he knows a large section of fans are not happy with his performances. However, the fans pay their money and have a right to their opinions and he should take the critisism on the chin and accept it.

Couldn't agree more Mr Happy. As far as I can see Jim has tried every combination of strikers except ones that dont include Bryan. Isn't it time to try one without him.

No one wants Bryan to start knocking in goals more than me but it aren't happening. Surely it is time for a change. Personally, I can not see any Town team without Dean Green in it. I know he has injury problems but when picking my attacking players he is the first name on my list. If I am right our most polific period of football was the last 15 minutes of the Finchley game. Green/Ofori/Ritchie if I remember right. I will give Trevor a little longer to make my mind up on him but I must say that Bryan is now the new Stuart Snowden. Enough is enough.

And surely any player has a right to react to an opinion expressed to him?.
Why should he "take it on the chin & accept it", just because someone has paid to get in?.

Quite right Arky.

It also depends what was said. If FJ gave me the right chap then I have known him for more than 30 years and he has a tendency to let fly!
