Where the hell is sudbury?

17 October 2002

FANS of AFC Sudbury's next FA Cup opponents are turning up the heat with the tie still 10 days away. Followers of St Albans City are already flooding the club's website rubbishing the chances of Keith Martin's battlers.

The attacks started on Monday morning soon after AFC were first out of the hat to host the Ryman Premier League leaders in the fourth qualifying round.

The prize for the winners is a potentially lucrative first round proper tie.

AFC have already earned a much needed £26,000 and manager Martin believes his team have the ability to overcome St Albans.

But some of their fans feel it is hardly worth AFC bothering to turn up.

And they were quick to begin taunting the double Jewson League champions' chances.

Typical of the early comments were:

-Where the hell is Sudbury?

-Unbeaten? They haven't played us yet, and

-AFC Sudbury. For crying out loud what's the worry?

The jibes look set to crank up the rivalry and ensure a bumper crowd at King's March Stadium on October 26.

Martin acknowledged it was a tough tie but he is not afraid of St Albans.

"If we show the same commitment and determination we did on Saturday we must have a great chance."

He was full of praise for his team who came out 2-0 winners in a bruising battle against Walton and Hersham in their FA Cup third qualifying round tie.

"There were some bad tackles and they tried to provoke us but to their credit, the lads didn't react. I couldn't have asked any more.

"Andy Claydon was mugged in the box but the ref didn't see it.

"But we knuckled down and thoroughly deserved our victory," said Martin.

"At the end I thought 'that'll do me'." He revealed that the players relaxed before the match with a meal and a game of snooker at his new home.

"Some were a bit nervous so we just relaxed. I didn't mention the game until 10 minutes before the start."

Of St Albans, Martin said: "They're no mugs but it could have been worse. We'll be well prepared."

He plans to have them watched, but is more concerned about how his own team performs on the day.

Admission prices for the FA Cup tie (set by the FA) are £6 (concessions £3).

I had to laugh. Mountain out of a molehill time, I think. The question "where the hell is Sudbury???" was, at the time probably a valid one. After all, there's a Sudbury in Middlesex and I think there's one in New Hampshire, or somesuch (unlikely to be going there in the FA Cup, though). If I go, I will, naturally, be on my best behaviour (in-law present and all that). Obviously he wouldn't put anything about a reasoned debate about the place from people that know the area (though he could have added something like, "that retard Trevinho, he thought Glemsford for 4 miles from Sudbury when actually it's 7") - doesn't make very good copy, does it?
