Local Talent!!!

Now that there has been a few departures from the squad am wondering if there is anyone looking around for some "Home Grown" talent?

I know we have the juniors but there are players out there wasting away in the "Pub" Leauges that far from being drunk, overweight & unskilled are playing some good football. Have seen scouts from other clubs at games & wondered if we were doing the same as is stupid not to or am I missing something?

wellzie,

I too have been thinking the same thing. I have played for 'Sunday League' teams and have seen some great players who are wasted at their club.

I am no David Beckham but I even offered myself to Margate for free (who hasn't). I'm not worried about wages - I'd just love to play for the club.

Unfortunately KR never got back to me in time for the pre-season trials and I have not heard from them since. (I'd even be happy to be a fresh pair of legs to come on 10-15 minutes from time to try and get round a tired defence.)

Anyways, there is other talent out there in Thanet.

Why dont you remind him? You have to be persistent. If you dont ask...........

zhukov,

Thats very true, the only problem being that they train too far away from me. (Ironic being as I live in Ramsgate, but they train in Gravesend I believe.)

Perhaps I'll get in touch again anyway, see what they say.

I remember the story of Garth Crooks,a local lad to Stoke City. he tried to get a trial but could,nt so he went down to the then victoria ground and started kicking a ball against the then managers,Tony Waddingtons office wall until Waddington became sick of the constant pounding and invited the young Crooks in for a trial. The rest is history,Tottenham,Man Utd and England. To succeed you have to try,try and try again.Good luck,Try hard, but don't sell yourself short.

The problem is we dont have a reserve team. You cant ask people to go straight from Sunday league to Ryman Prem.

Why not?
I played in the North Kent sunday league cup final for South Darenth v AEI in the mid 1980, a tall lean striker scored 2 past me - Christian Fordred.
2 Weeks later he was playing for the Fleet.
Great untapped players are out there. Many simply do not want to play at a higher level, it is a question of finding the right player at the right time.

I also seem to recall Folkestone spotted Paul Chambers on some windswept council pitch in Lydd.

However, it would be sensible to have something to bridge the gap between parks footie and Ryman Premier footie.

It's not just a jump in ability we are talking about. There is a big difference between playing with your mates on a Sunday and playing before 800 paying spectators with all the responsibilities that entails.

It might not appear this way sometimes, but most non-league players are pretty dedicated and 'professional' in their approach.

We haven't had a reserve team for many years. It used to be a good place to recruit people from local football (especially in the bad old days) and have a look at them. Some went on to play in the first team.

I played for Margate reserves shortly before they disbanded. I think it may be a step forward to have the reserves team based locally (i.e. Hartsdown). That way they can filter through local talent to the first team.

(I played in a friendly against Herne Bay. The game ended 1-1 and we scored one of the greatest goals I've ever seen.)

Most people would jump at the chance to play for Margate F.C, if they get up week in/week out with crap weather to play for their local then I think they would have no problem for their League team.

As for training are there any plans to bring the team to Margate as is their home after all [color:"red"] ? [/color]

Will be going to the meeting this evening & if poss will ask myself.....Watch this space!!!

Know of a promising 20yr old who has been playing competatively since school & who has always given 110% & is a proven team player/goal scorer, will try to catch CK at some point & pass on his details.

That's fine if the 20-year-old wants to spend all season sitting on the subs' bench and maybe get five minutes at the end of a Westview Cup tie.

We all know how loathe CK is to field untested players. If we had a reserve team then this kid could build up a reputation at the club first. If he really wants to play semi-pro then there are other clubs where he would have a better chance.

To be fair, i also think many supporters are loathe to see untested players in competitive games.

It is a results business and we cannot expect good results alongside untested players.

We would soon get fed up and CK does have his job to look after.

I'm sure a reserve team will comer in time.

Every so often we have to step back and remember that in March we were always going to 'the last ever' margate game. !!!

My understanding is that a reserve team will be set up for next season. I guess that will play in the Kent (Reserve) League and provide a progression opportunity for the current youth players. Wasn't there advice that a match every week on the newly laid pitch would not be advisable?
